Description

Dec. 14, 1965 B. K. SCHONBERG GIRDLE Filed March 20, 1964 FIG. 3
ATTORNEY 3,223,089 GIRDLE Bette Kaupp Schonberg, Scotch Plains, N.J., assignor to Maidenform, Inc, New York, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed Mar. 20, 1964, Ser. No. 353,342 1 Claim. (Cl. 128541) The object of the invention is to provide a girdle which will provide improved conformation-control, the girdle being more particularly constructed for use by women. Its characteristic is the employment of a girdle front area comprising the usual vertical stretch front panel surrounded partially, i.e. at the sides and base with a relatively narrow two-way stretch band assembly, each band meeting and being seamed to a V-shaped relatively heavy insert of horizontal stretch only and which is very broad at its base, so that it overlies the front area of the girdle to a substantial degree, and which insert overlies the back area of the girdle to a substantially greater degree. These inserts are V-shaped with the V inverted, and each insert extends upwardly a distance at least to, and preferably beyond, the longitudinal center line of the girdle. The back of the girdle is an area of two-way stretch material which follows the contour of the inserts which extend over the back area of the girdle.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an isometric view of the girdle looking toward its front area, as worn by a user.
FIGURE 2 is a view similar to FIGURE 1 looking at the rear area of the girdle.
FIGURE 3 is a view similar to the preceding figures looking at the side of the girdle.
In the figures, the arrows denote the directions of stretch.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the front panel 1 is of vertical stretch material and rises to a waist band 2, being seamed thereto. At each side of the front panel is a band 3 of two-way stretch material which is seamed to the front panel. At their lower areas, the bands 3 swing inwardly and meet below and at the center line of panel 1 where they are mutually joined at 4. Also, they are seamed to a lowermost narrow band of horizontal stretch material.
Joined by seaming to the two-way stretch front bands 3 at each side thereof is a wide panel 6 of horizontal stretch material, which extends to the front of the girdle a lesser distance than over the back area, as will be noted by comparison of FIGURE 1 with FIGURE 2. These panels 6 are V-shaped with the V inverted, and each in- Patented Dec. 14, 1965 sert extends upwardly a distance at least to, and preferably beyond, the longitudinal center line of the girdle. The major back area of the girdle, shown at 7, is an area of two-way stretch material which follows the contour of the inserts which extend substantially across the back area of the girdle, and which is seamed thereto and to the panels 6. For clarification of the drawings, the seaming has been drawn heavier than would be the case in commercial practice.
In the action of the girdle, the two-way stretch of the front bands 3 and the girdle back area 7, coacts with the panels 6 to provide a smooth line over the hips and the buttocks whilst adequate provision is made for vertical stretch of all of the girdle elements, except panels 6, between the base of the girdle and its waist band. Thus excellent control is provided.
It will be understood that modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements shown in the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
A girdle comprising a front construction having a vertical stretch panel, having at each of its sides and joined thereto a relatively narrow two-way stretch band, which bands are secured together below said vertical stretch panel, the lower areas of said bands being curved inwardly to said jointure thereof, a two-way stretch material constituting the major back area of the girdle and secured at their upper side edge portions to said bands, and two V-shaped panels with the V inverted, each V- shaped panel being of relatively heavy horizontal stretch material, each V-shaped panel extending upwardly from the base of the girdle a distance at least to the longitudinal center line of the girdle and extending to the front of the girdle and to the back of the girdle, the extension thereof at the front of the girdle being for a lesser distance than to the back of the girdle, said horizontal stretch panels being seamed to the two-way stretch major back area of the girdle and to said front two-way stretch relatively narrow bands.
