Description

Oct. 12, 1965 w. E, SENDER 3,211,509
SUPPORT AND ENCLOSURE FOR GARBAGE CANS Filed March a, 1963 United States Patent 3,211,509 SUPPORT AND ENCLOSURE FOR GARBAGE CANS Wilfred E. Sender, 700 Cypress Ave, Johnstown, Pa. Filed Mar. 6, 1963, Ser. No. 263,265 1 Claim. (Cl. 312329) This invention relates to closures and, more particularly, to doors or closures for supporting garbage cans and the like.
The basic idea of the present invention is a housing for a garbage can or the like in the form of a closure in the form of a door. The framework is made of sheets of steel or other suitable material reinforced by suitable structural members from which a support for a removable garbage can is suspended. The door and its frame may be mounted as part of a new building in new housing constructions and thereby may be made part of a re'sidence or the like. Likewise, the can and arrangement may be housed in a small steel structure or concrete building which would be built contiguous to a residence or restaurant.
It is, accordingly, an object of this invention to provide an improved garbage can holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide an enclosure for a garbage can and holder which can be made in the form of a cabinet or a part of an individual buildmg.
A further object of the invention is to provide a support for garbage cans and the like which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and simple and eflicient to use.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportions, and minor details of construction without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a front view of a garbage can housing according to the invention showing one of the doors broken away to better illustrate the invention;
FIG. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on line 22 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is an isometric view of one door showing the garbage can support thereon.
Now with more particular reference to the drawing, the housing is shown by Way of example only as a cabinet. It is understood, however, that the entire cabinet could be recessed into the wall of a building; for example, a house in the process of construction. In such case, the sides and back of the cabinet could be eliminated.
The cabinet shown has a back 11, sides 12, and door jambs 13. The cabinet is supported on legs 14. Hinges 15 are attached to the door jambs 13. These hinges may be attached by means of welding, bolts, or any other well known fastening means.
Door panels 16 have handles 17 fixed thereto for convenience in opening the doors. The doors are made up of flanges 18 which extend entirely around each door 3,211,509 Patented Oct. 12, 1965 and reinforcing channels 19 which, together, provide a rigid door.
Bases 20 are fixed to the channels 19. The round bases 20 for each can are in the form of an annular flanged member. Each flanged member has an inwardly directed bottom flange 23 and a vertical flange 24. The vertical flange 24 defines a ring which is slightly larger than the bottom of a garbage can 25 so that the can rests freely therein on the inwardly directed flange 23.
Outer brackets 21 are welded to the outside edges of the channels 19 and inner brackets 22 are welded to the inside edges of the channels 19. Both the inner brackets and the outer brackets are welded to the vertical flange 24 of the base 20 of the garbage can support.
It will be seen that conventional garbage cans can be supported with the bottom of the can resting on the inwardly directed flange 23 and the sides and the can itself retained by the flange 24. Thus, the garbage can cannot slide off of the support. The rugged construction of the doors will retain the brackets in posit-ion without warping the doors.
The foregoing specification sets forth the invention in its preferred practical forms but it is understood that the structure shown is capable of modification within a range of equivalents without departing from the invention which is to be understood is broadly novel as is commensurate with the appended claim.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
A garbage can support comprising a door, said door being made of a front panel having side edges and inwardly directed flanges,
two spaced, vertically extending reinforcing means fixed to said panel on the inside surface thereof and spaced laterally inwardly from the side edges of said door and adjacent the center thereof,
inner and outer brackets attached to said means adjacent the bottom of said door and extending inwardly from the inside of said door,
and annular members,
the inner ends of said outer brackets being attached to the outer periphery of said annular members adjacent the sides thereof at diametrically opposite parts thereof,
the inner ends of said inner brackets being attached to said annular members at relatively close spaced positions,
said annular members comprising an annular flange and an upwardly directed flange defining a support for receiving the bottom of a garbage can.
