Abstract

488,970. Telephone cabinets. BURGESS LABORATORIES, Inc., C. F. July 27, 1937, No. 20755. Convention date, July 31, 1936. [Classes 20 (i) and 20 (ii)] A conversation booth, telephone cabinet, or the like, has its inner surface formed of sound-proof construction to absorb sounds incident thereon and is provided with one or more ventilation apertures, the arrangement being such that, that external sound is not excluded from the booth but is absorbed before it can reach the users. The walls and roof are lined on the insides by perforated membrane panels 19 as described in Specification 327,186, [Class 20 (ii)], the abutting inturned flanges of the panels being welded together at 33, Fig. 2, with or without strengthening strips 34; porous fibrous packing such as mineral wool, animal hair and the like is placed behind the lining of sufficient thickness to ensure good absorption and the outside is covered with flat steel plates 11. To render the outside covering material antivibrational, it is backed by a corrugated layer of cardboard 25, or wooden slats, and a surface layer of paper 26, the surfaces of the slats or the corrugations of the cardboard being attached securely to both outer and inner plates. The outer lining may be stiffened by horizontal V-shaped bars welded to the outer plate. The flanged edges 27 of the outer plates of both walls and roof are interlocked with the edges of the lining plates by seamed joints and the roof may be joined directly to the upper edges of the wall plates or spaced therefrom to afford ventilation. The walls and back are supported by a horizontally disposed channel-section bar 35 carried by uprights 16 and brackets 17, so that the bottom of the booth is open. No door is provided, the increase of depth above the width ensuring that persons in the booth near the rear wall may speak together undisturbed by extraneous noises. When used as a telephone cabinet a support 20 for the telephone 21 is provided on the rear wall and the buzzer or bell 22 is attached to a skirting plate 23 depending from the rear wall. The booth may be of rectangular cross-section or of oval cross-section with a narrowed entrance as shown in Fig. 4, in which case, the outer plate 40 need not be of the compound form previously described, since a curved plate does not have the same tendency to vibrate as a flat plate.
