Description

SPECIFICATION Acoustic panel for sound insulation This invention is concerned with acoustic panels and a sound-insulating partition or enclosure made from the acoustic panels, The aim of the present invention is the production of a sound-insulating partition or enclosure, for example to isolate noisy machinery from workers in other parts of a common working area, which has sound insulation qualities comparable to a permanent masonry partition or enclosure while remaining demountable for removal or to increase or decrease the size of the partition or enclosure.
This aim is achieved in the present invention by use of an acoustic panel based on a woodwool slab as primary sound insulating cement. A woodwool slab is a compressed mass of wood shavings bonded with Portland cement. Their usual use is as roof decking, and their manufacture for that purpose is the subject of BS 1 1105 :1 972.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided an acoustic panel comprising a rigid frame encircling the edges of a woodwool slab or the outside edges of a plurality of slabs in edge to edge contact, the frame being adapted for engagement with another frame or with a support framework.
The woodwool slab has excellent sound insulating properties due to its weight, and also some sound absorbing property due to the interstices formed by the entangled wood shavings. If desired the weight of the slab can be increased by coating its faces with a sand/cement screed. The sound absorbing properties of the panel are preferably increased by providing a layer of a fibre glass mat over the woodwool slab on the surface of the panel which will face the noise source. In a preferred embodiment, both faces of the woodwool slab are covered by a fibre glass mat.
The composite of glass fibre mat(s) and woodwool slab is preferably maintained in position by a metal sheet attached to the frame and extending over the outer surfaces of the panel.
The metal sheet which will face the noise source is apertured so that it is acoustically transparent.
The rigid frame is preferably formed from metal channels, with the flanges extending outwardly from the panel, so that the metal sheets forming the outer surfaces of the panel may be attached to the flanges.
The panels may be assembled into partitions or enclosures by linking the rigid frames directly to each other or to a supporting framework.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a partition comprising a plurality of the acoustic panels held substantially vertically with the top and bottom edges of the rigid frames being gripped within the channel of upper and lower elongate horizontal channel-shaped support members linking all the panels and with the vertical edges of the frames of adjacent panels being gripped within the channels of elongate, vertical I-shaped support members. The I-shaped support member is preferably formed by welding back-to-back lengths of the same channel section that is used for the horizontal support members.
The present invention also provides an enclosure in which partitions as described above form wails linked by corner support members formed from two lengths of the aforementioned channel section welded at right angles to each other.
Similarly welded lengths may replace the upper horizontal support members so that further panels may be used to roof the enclosure.
By way of example, an embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 is a section through an acoustic panel of the present invention.
FIGURE 2 is a section through a horizontal channel-shaped support member.
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of an acoustic panel mounted in a lower horizontal support member as the beginning of forming a partition.
FIGURE 4 is a section through an I-shaped support member.
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view of two panels linked by an I-shaped support member.
FIGURE 6 is a section through a corner or roof support member.
FIGURE 7 is a sectional view of two panels linked by a corner support member, and FIGURE 8 is a section through a doorway set into a partition.
Referring to Figure 1, an acoustic panel in accordance with this invention has as primary sound insulating element a woodwool slab 1. On each of the main surfaces of the woodwool slab are placed fibreglass mats 2 and 3. The composite structure of fibreglass mats and woodwool slab is surrounded by a rigid frame formed from channelshaped members 4 which are positioned with their flanges directed outwardly from the panel.
The panel is closed on one side by a continuous metal sheet 5 and on the other side by an apertured sheet 6.
In manufacture of the acoustic panel, firstly a rigid rectangular frame is formed by welding together channel shaped members 4. The metal sheet 5 is then spot welded to the flanges of the channel shaped frame members to form an open tray. Into this tray are laid fibreglass mat 3, woodwool slab 1 and fibreglass mat 2 and the panel is closed by spot welding the apertured sheet 6 to the other flanges of the frame.
In use of the panel, the apertured sheet is the side of the panel which faces the noise source, and so the apertured sheet must be substantially acoustically transparent. A sheet in which the apertures form 24% of the panel surface has been found suitable. If the panel is to be used in a partition or enclosure where airborne contaminants such as paint or oil might enter the apertures of the apertured sheet 6 and be absorbed within the fibreglass mat 2, then a thin plastics sheet is interposed between the fibreglass mat 2 and the apertured sheet 6.
In addition to providing means for attachment of the metal sheets 5 and 6, the flanges of the frame members 4 are used to engage the panel with support members to link the panels and build up partitions and enclosures. The support members are based on another channel shaped member as shown in section in Figure 2. The channel of this support member has internal dimensions substantially the same as the external dimensions of the frame members 4, so that when the frame members 4 of 9 completed panel are pushed into the channel of the support members they are gripped by the support members.
In Figure 3, a completed panel of the type shown in Figure 1 is arranged vertically with its lower edge pushed into a lower horizontal channel-shaped support member as the beginning of forming a partition. The horizontal member is preferably bolted to the floor or screwed to a wood beam laid on the floor.
The formation of the partition is continued by placing further vertical panels in the lower horizontal channel-shaped support member of Figure 3 and connecting adjacent panels by means of an intermediate support member shown in section in Figure 4. This has an I-shaped cross section and is ideally made up by welding back-to back two of the support members shown in Figure 2. As with the horizontal support member, the rigid frame of the panels is pushed home into the channel of the I-shaped support member so that it is firmly gripped in the channel. The assembly of adjacent panels using the support member of Figure 4 is shown in Figure 5. The upper edges of the panels are then linked with a further support member of the type shown in Figure 2.
To form an enclosure, two or more partitions are connected as enclosure walls using a corner support member as shown in section in Figure 6.
Again this is made up from the basic channel of Figure 2, this time with two such channels being welded at right angles to each other. The configuration of the finished corner is shown in Figure 7. If an open top enclosure is required, the upper edges of the panels forming the walls of the enclosure are held together by pressing over the edges a further channel-shaped support member of the type shown in Figure 2, as already described. If a roof is required for the enclosure, then a support member of the section already shown in Figure 6 is used horizontally along the top edges of the panels. The configuration is again as shown in Figure 7 but this time considering Figure 7 as a vertical section through a wall and roof panel. When roof panels are provided, the space between the channel forming the frame of each panel and the channel of the support member with which the frame is engaged may be used for insertion of a stiffening bar which is bolted to the support channel so that the roof structure is of adequate strength. Whether or not a stiffening bar is used depends on the distance bridged by the roof panels.
A door may be provided in a full enclosure by leaving in one wall a space equivalent to one panel. Into this space is inserted a door frame made up from members of Z-shaped cross section as shown in Figure 8. A door panel of similar construction to the panel shown in Figure 1 but slightly undersized is inserted in the doorway and hinged to the door frame. Channel-shaped members as shown in Figure 2 are pressed onto the frame of the panel to provide a clean edge to the door but do not have any other supporting function.
It can be seen that the combination of acoustic panels and linking support members as described in this specification allows the building of selfsupporting sound-insulating structures requiring no bolts or other fixing means, and so readily demountable. Using panels as shown in Figure 1 with a 20 mm thick fibreglass mat facing the noise source, a core of a 50 mm thick woodwool slab, followed by a further glass fibre mat of 10 mm thickness it has been found possible to achieve a sound reduction index of 30 db.
