UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWVIN HAAS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WATCH-OAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,021, dated June 30, 1885. Application filed January 14, 1885 (No model.)
.T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN Hnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watch-Gases,of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to watch and locket cases; and it consists in the construction of such articles as hereinafter described, whereby they are adapted to receive, retain, and permit the interchange of removable monogram, initial, design, and other ornamental plates.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a watch-case constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2, a perspective of an initial-plate; Fig. 3, a plan of the interchangeable design-plate, or of the reverse side of an initial-plate; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the outer cap of the case.
Like letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
A represents a watch-case, one of the outer caps of which is provided with an inner bezel or recess, A, which bezel or recess may be of any desired configuration, and at any point on the cap, as is desired-that is, either eccentric or central-to accord with the general design of the ornamentation of the cap.
B represents a plate of the same configuration as the recess A, which plate has engraved thereon any desired design, initial letter, monogram, 820., and which may be either flush with the surface of the case or cap,and provided with raised designs, or, said plate may be of sufficient thickness to project above the surface of the case, and the designs cut in the same as desired. The removable plate 13 may bear any initial, monogram, coat of arms, or other design, either in relief or intaglio, and either ornamented or set with precious stones, or plain, and a companion-plate bearing another design conforming to that of the general ornamentation of the cap is preferably furnished with the case, for a purpose hereinafter mentioned. The removable plate may be secured within the bezel or recess by screws, or by burring the edge of the bezel thereon, or in any other desired or well-known manner which will permit of its easy removal.
I am also aware that the central portion of an inside cap of a watch-case has been entirely removed for the purpose of saving material and to receive portraits or pictures, and do not claim such construction as of myinvention.
The advantages arising from my invention will be seen and appreciated in that jewelers instead of being forced to carry a large stock of initial cases need only one, and any number of plates desired, so that any initial may be placed in the bezel or recess A, and should the owner wish to dispose of a watch it would reduce the commercial value of the article should his name or initial be engraved thereon; butwith my invention it would rather enhance the value to remove the initial or monogram and substitute therefor the companion plate in proper design, as described. It will also be seen that silver cases may be provided with gold designs or initial-plates,
or the plate may be made of different materials, and, if desired, may have enameled initials thereon. Ahole, A", is shown in the cap which may be used or not, for the purpose of forcing the plate out of the bezel in order to substitute another plate or for a soldering-hole. The removable plate B may have upon one face an initial, and upon the back of the same, as shown in Fig. 3, a design conforming to the general design of the cap, so that a single plate serves as an initial and a design plate.
Having described my invention and its op eration, what I claim is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a watchcase, an outer cap of which is provided with an independent bezel or recess,of any desired configuration, adapted to receive interchangeable and removable desi gnplates, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a watch-case, of an outer cap having an independent bezel of any desired configuration, as A, and a removable plate, as B, bearing a design, initial, or 1110110 In testimony whereof I affix my signature gram, substantially as specified. in presence of two witnesses.
3. The combination with the outer ca of a watch-case, ot'a removable initial plat-e h ving EDWVIN HAAS' 5 a design upon its back conforming to the gen- Vitnesses:
