CHRISTOPHER O. SHELBY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STOCKING-SUPPORTER.
tZPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.320,301, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed April 7, 1885.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER O. SHELBY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stocking-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of that class of gentlemens stocking-supporters or garters which encircle the calf of the wearers leg, and are provided with a depending portion and a clasp for attachment to the stocking; and it consists in certain novel details of construction, which I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a view of a garter provided with my improvements; Figs. 2 and 3, modifications of the same; and Fig. 4 is a view of the clasp on the end of the webbing.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate like parts.
A represents a piece of elastic webbing, provided at or near one end with a hook, B, and at its other end with an adjustable sliding clasp, 0, adapted to slide upon the webbing, and forming a loop within which is a metal ring, D. The clasp C is constructed, as shown in Fig. 4, of a metal plate provided with the ears or lugs c a, perforated as shown, said perforations forming the bearing for an angular locking-plate, (I, provided with serrations on its edge for engaging and holding the clasp from sliding on the webbing. A small slot, e, is provided near one end of the plate, and also several projections or teeth, ff. The end of the webbing is fastened to the clasp by being inserted through. the slot 6 in the plate, bent over, and the teeth f f inserted through it and bent down, fastening it securely to said plate, and as the strain on the webbing will be lengthwise of the plate the webbing will have an extra bearing against the edge of the slot. and will not pull or tear out the end, as it would were it connected directly to the projections ff. The size of the loop, and consequently the length of the webbing encircling the leg, in which the ring D is, can be regu- (No model.)
the wearer.
The clamp E, connecting the depending portion and ring, is clamped securely to the former, but is permitted to slide a little on the ring, so that friction incident to the movement of the depending portion will not wear it, but will. come upon the clamp, or it may be clamped rigidly to both ring and depend ing loop, if desired.
Various modes of attaching the cord and the ring by the clamp may be employedsuch, for instance, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In the former the cord is shown passing around the outside of the ring, and where it is crossed a single clamp fastening is employed; and in the latter the cord is passed around without being crossed, and is secured by two clamps, one on either side, as shown. In both these forms it will be observed that the ring is subjected to all wear in the loop of the webbing encircling the leg, and the cord, which is 011 the outside, gives an ornamental appearance to the garter.
This garter is ornamental in appearance, serviceable, and can be manufactured very cheaply, and is a decided improvement on the garters now on the market, for the reason that in those the webbing connecting with the clasp is looped through. the ring attached to the webbing encircling the leg, and slides upon it, and is subjected to wear; but it will be seen my invention obviates this by providing the metal loop sliding in the ring.
I claim as my invention 1. In a stockingsupporter, the combination of the webbing having the hook and inclosing thewearefis leg, the ring attached to said webbing, the depending portion having the clasp for attachment to the stocking, and the independent metal clamp connecting the depending port-ion and ring, substantially as described.
2. In a stockirig-supporter, the combination of the webbing having the hook and encircling the wearers leg, the ring connected thereto,
the depending portion having the clasp for attachment to the stocking, and the independent metal clamp secured rigidly to the depending portion and sliding on the ring, substantially as described.
f 3. The cB'mbination, with the webbing and the clasp for varying the size of the loop in which the ring is secured, consisting of the plate having the cars (l (l, the cam plate mounted therein, the slot 6, and projections ff, IQ
of the ring, the depending portion having the clasp for attachment to the stocking, and the clamp for securing the ring to said depending portion, substantially as described.
