HAND FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
ESPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,226, dated June 16,1885.
Application filed March 11, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OLIVER E. CoNNER and TIMOTHY E. MoNrumnA, both of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand Fire-Extinguishers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of our improved hand fire-extinguisher, and Fig. 2 is an external view of the upper or forward end of the same.
The present invention relates to an improvement in hand fire-extinguishers, consisting of an outer metallic tube provided at one end with an ejecting tube or nozzle enlarging inwardly and projecting back, and having therein a plunger. Between said plunger and the nozzle a valve opening outwardly is provided to prevent the passage of the air inwardly, while a lateral opening from this inner tube is provided with a ball-valve to receive the fireextinguishing fluid within the shell. WVhen the plunger is operated rapidly back and forth, the fire-extinguishing fluid is received through this lateral valve and then forced outwardly through the ejecting-tube, all of which will now be fully set forth in detail.
In the accompanying drawings,A is an elongated metallic shell or tube having at the ends heads B and B, preferably segmental. Oentrally within one of these heads we provide an ejecting tube or nozzle, 0, which extends inward longitudinally, enlarging inwardly, forming an ej ecting-tube, D. \Vithin this tube we provide a plunger, E, which extends out centrally through the end of the tube D and head B at the opposite end of the device from the head B,containing the nozzle 0. This plunger is provided with a handle, F, for operating the same within the tube D. The part of the tube D between the nozzle 0 and the plungerhead E is provided with a valve operating outwardly.
Parallel with the tube D, between it and the outer shell, Anve provide a second and smaller tube, G, having the end H opened, while the opposite end,I, communicates with the forward end of the tube D, the outlet between the two being provided with a ball-valve, J, held in position by means of cross-wires K.
\Vithin the end of the nozzle 0 we provide a plug or stopper, L, which is slightly soldered in position, the outer part preferably formed with an eye, M, for hanging the same up. The plunger-stem E through the head B of the de vice is also slightly soldered when the plunger-head E is down near the nozzle 0.
One of the heads B or B of the device is provided with an opening, N, having upon its outer side a metallic piece, 0, soldered thereon, for the purpose of inserting the fluid into the device.
Vithin the shell A we provide any fluid or chemical preparation that will extinguish fires.
In operating the device, the stopper L is re moved by twisting it off with the fingers, or otherwise, and then by giving the handle F of the plunger-rod E a slight twist the solder upon the said rod E is disengaged, when the plunger may be operated back and forth, and the fluid within the shell, passing through the tube G, enters the larger tube D, when it is ejected through the nozzle 0 upon the fire.
Vhen the device becomes empty and it becomes necessary to fill the same, the cap O,sol dered upon the head B or B, is removed, and the device is then filled up, and after the cap 0 is soldered on is again ready for operation.
By means of the eye M in the stopper L the device may be hung up, and thus be ready for instant use.
What we claim as new is- 1. In ahand fire-extinguisher, an outer shell provided at one end with a nozzle enlarged inwardly, forming an ejeetingtube provided with a plunger having inlet and outlet valves, the inlet-valve communicating with a longitudinal tube extending to the opposite end of the shell, the nozzle having astoppersoldered in position, and the plungerrod also soldered in position, so as to be readily detached, substantially as herein set forth.
2. In a hand fire-extinguisher, an elongated metallic shell having segmental heads, one of them having an opening for the purpose of charging the device with a fireextinguishing preparation, one end or head provided with a nozzle enlarging inwardly and provided with a valve and plunger and a longitudinal tube, one end open and the opposite end provided with a ball-valve communicating with the forward end of the ejecting-tube, both the stopper-within the nozzle and the plunger-rod soldered slightly, so as to be readily detachable when desired for use, substantially as here in set forth.
3. In a hand fire-extinguisher, an ejectingtube, one end provided with a valve and outwardly contracted so as to form anozzle, having therein a stopper, the said tube provided with a lateral opening having a ball-valve held in position by nieanso'f' 'wires communicating by means of a small tube with the fluid at the opposite end, substantially as herein set forth.
4. The combination of a metallic shell havirg segmental heads, one of the said heads provided with an opening having a cap soldered thereon, with a pair of inner tubes, one
of them having therein a valve, thence contracted outwardly through the head, forming a nozzle, the inner part of the tube provided with a plunger for ejecting the fluid, the other tube extending to the opposite end of the shell, the two connected by means of an opening having therein a ball-valve, the Wholearranged as and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth.
' In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, this 7 thday of March, 1885, in the presence of witnesses.
