UNi'rn STATES OLIVER E. GONNER, OF HARTIVELL, OHIO.
HAND FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SEPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,225, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed January 28, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER E. CONNER, of Hartwell, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand Fire-Extinguishers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my hand fireextinguisher. Fig. 2 is a view of the same closed; Fig; 3, an enlarged longitudinal section showing the construction of the plunger within and of the cap and ejecting-tube at one end, and Fig. 4 rear end of tube.
My invention relates to hand or portable fire-extinguishers adapted to receive any suitable fluid compound which on being ejected on a fire will extinguish the same; and the nature of my invention consists in a novel device for the purpose above named, which will be fully understood from the following dcscription, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a tube of any suitable size diametrically, and as long as may be convenient, having at one end a head, 13. Centrally in this head is placed a small nozzle, 0, which projects outwardly from the head, as shown more fully in Fig. 3. Around this nozzle 0, and attached to the end of the tube A. is a conical cap, D, having a screwthreaded end, E, over which is placed a screw-threaded cap, F. On the inside of the screw-threaded cap F, I place a cushion, G, of felt, cork, or gutta-percha, so that when the cap F is screwed down the cushion binds against the end of the nozzle 0, thereby retaining the liquid within the tube A, and also preventing the air from entering and impairing the efiiciency of the liquid.
H is a rod or bar having at its rear end a handle, I, so that it can be readily grasped by the operator. This rod projects centrally through the head J at the rear end of the tube A.
The forward end of the rod H within the tube A is provided with a cone, K, the apex of which is soldered to the rod H. This cone is provided with a number of perforations, and is provided at its base with a concave or (No model.)
dish-shaped plate, M. Centrally it is provided with an opening, IT. In this opening a ball-valve, O, rests, and a cage, P, is suitably secured to the dish-shaped plate M directly over the ball-valve, so as to keep it in position and assure its return to the seat formed by the aperture or opening N. It is obvious that as the base of the cone covers the entire area of the tube A,if the tube is filled with liquid and the plunger is drawn rearwardl y, the liquid will be forced through the apertures L, and thence through the open ing N, raising the valve 0 from its seat, escaping thence into the opposite side of the plunger-head, and that when the plunger is moved forward the Valve will be drawn back into its cage 1 and the liquid ejected through the nozzle O with a force proportionate to the motion of the plunger. Preparatory to placing the liquid in the tube, the cap F is screwed down and the plunger placed within the tube in the position indicated in Fig. 1. The tube A is filled with the proper liquid through the head J, which is then soldered in place, and the rod H is soldered to this head, as shown at Q, Fig. 1.
\V hen it is desired for use, the cap F is first removed and the tube grasped by one hand and the plungerhandle in the other, and by a torsional movement of the rod the solder Q is loosened, and the plunger is in position to be reciprocated and the liquid ejected, as heretofore stated.
Instead of soldering the rear end, and to enable me to refill the tube, and. also obviate the necessity of resoldering the rod, H to the head J, I provide the rear head, J, preferably conically shaped, as shown in Fig. 4, with a screw-thread, upon which is fitted a screwthreaded cap, It. The rod H passes centrally through this cap, and is soldered to the said cap It, as shown at S. Instead, therefore, of merely releasing the rod from the soldered head, as shown in Fig. 1, by means of rupturing the solder, the rod is unscrewed from the head J, as shown by T. The rod H is then in position to be moved forward and backward in the process of ejectingthe liquid.
In practice I shall employ a suitable packing or closing device, U, which will prevent the liquid from being casually forced out of the tube backward when cap R is removed. This packing or closing device may be omitted. Having described my inventin,\vhat I claim 1s 7 1. In a fireextinguisher, the combination of the tube A, having at one end the head B, provided with the projecting nozzle 0, the cap D, provided with a serew-cap, F, the plunger H within the tube A, having a coni- 10 cal-shaped head provided with the depressed valve-seat M, the valve 0, cage 1, and the head Q, soldered to the rod H, as and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth.
2. In a fire-extinguisher, the tube or liquidreceptacle A, the nozzle 0, fixed cap D, re-
movable sealing-cap F, and a head, J, in combination with a perforated plunger, a valve, anda rod therefor, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a fluid-receptacle provided with a nozzle and a closing-cap 2o therefor, a rear head, J, provided with a screw-cap, and a plunger-rod soldered to this cap, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I, have hereunto set my hand, this 16th day of January, 1885, in the presence of Witnesses.
OLIVER E. (BONNER.
