Application filed September To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I. JOHN ARTHUR Goonr-iLn, a subject of' the King of Great Britain, residing at 73 Dorset Street, Little Horton, Bradford, in the county of York, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire Extinguishers, of which the following` description, having reference to the accompanying sheets of drawings, is a specification.
It relates to extincteurs, or apparatus for use in the extinguishing of fires, of' the type or class .in which a vessel or container has a liquid under pressure together with solid matter contained within it so that when a valve is opened the liquid may be forced by the internal pressure to issue from a nozzle. In this type of apparatus the vessel is supplied with its solid and liquid contents and then is charged under pressure so that air or other gas may force out the contents in known manner. The solid contents remain at the base of the vessel when same is not in use While the valve is situated at the opposite end to said base and it is necessary when bringing said vessel into use that the user should invert same before opening the valve otherwise if the valve is previously opened the pressure is lost and when the vessel is inverted it fails to act as desired.
My invention consists in the employment of a gravity actuated sliding valve mounted vupon the end of a tube arranged to extend from the ordinary screw-down valve in the head or neck of the vessel to within any appropriate dista-nce from the base of such vessel by which means the object desired is effected.

Fig. l is a sectional elevation showing the apparatus constructed or produced in accordance with my invention, the same being shown in its vertical position with the valve open as when in use.
Fig. 2 is a similar' view to Fig. l but shows the vessel inverted with the outlet valve still open but with other devices for preventing the apparatus from acting unless brought back to the desired position.

Upon the lower end of this tube (Z I mount a slidable member or sleeve f which takes over the end 3 of the tube Z while it is secured upon said tube Z by a screwed or other collar 4L coming in contact with the shoulder 5 on said tube CZ.
The free, inner end c of the tube cl is in the form ot a valve seating while the member f has a valve or seating 6 at its lower end which when the vessel a is inverted (as shown by Fig. 2) will, by gravity, descend with the member f so as to fit upon or take over the seating 3 on the end of the tube l thus forming a joint to close the opening c through the tube d.
By these means when the outer valve o of the vessel d is opened in order to bring the apparatus into use the internal pressure acts through the openings 7, 7a made through the walls of the sliding member f so as to force out the contents of the vessel @through the opening e in the tube Z past the valve l) to be discharged through the nozzle g, as desired.
After the user has opened the valve b to permit the actions described, provided by mistake or otherwise he inverts the vessel a, as shown by Fig. 2, then the sliding member will bring the valve seating G against the seating 3 on the end of tube (Z and so entirely close the openings in it andthe passage through the vessel a, thus the apparatus will cease to act until thc user again turns it into proper position as shown by Fig. l in order that the member f may slide or descend to the position shown by Fig. l to enable the actions to recommence and this is effected without loss (to any appreciable extent) of internal pressure.
Such being the nature and object of my said invention what I claim is -1. In a fire extinguisher of the character described, the combination of a container, a pipe extending into the container from one end, a control valve adjacent the outer end of said pipe, and a sleeve surrounding the end of the pipe within the container and constructed to establish communication between Jthe container and pipe when the apparatus is positioned so that the outer end of the pipe is directed upward and adapted to slide on the pipe to cut off communication between the pipe and container when the latter is positioned with the outer end of the pipe directed downward.
2. In a fire extinguisher of the character described, the combination ot a. container, a pipe extending into the container from one end, the wall of the pipe adjacent the inner end thereof being shaped to provide an annular, tapering, valve seat at said inner end, a control valve adjacent the outer end of said pipe, and a sleeve closed at one end surrounding the inner end ot the pipe to move freely longitudinally thereof and constructed to establish communication between the pipe and container when the parts are positioned so that the outer end of the pipe is directed upward, said valve having at its closed end a recess adapted to receive and closely sur- .round the tapered valve seat at the end of the pipe when the container is positioned so that the outer end of the pipe is directed downward.
3. In a rire extinguisher of the character' described, the combination of a container, a pipe extending into the container from one end, the inner end of the pipe having an enlarged head providing an annular valve seat at its free end and an annular shoulder in rear of said valve seat, a control valve adjacent the outer end of said pipe, and a sleeve oi: greater length than said head, surrounding the head and freely movable longitudinally ther-cover, said sleeve establishing communication between the container and pipe when the parts are positioned so thatthe outer end of the pipe is directed upward, one end of said sleeve constituting a. valve adapted to cooperate with the valve seat at the inner end of the pipe to cut off vcommunication between the container and pipe when the container is positioned so that the outer end of the pipe is directed downward, and said sleeve co-operating with the annular shoulder formed on the pipe by the enlarged head to limit movement of the sleeve toward the inner end of the pipe.
