This invention relates to re extinguishers.
More particularly stated, the invention relates to the combination extinguisher and alarm device.
The invention has for its salient object to provide operating means for the iire extinguisher in combination with an alarm device so constructed and arranged that the operating means will function automatically in case of re and will set the extinguisher in operation and simultaneously operate the alarm.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination extinguisher and an alarm operating device that is simple in construction and e'icient in operation.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specication taken in connection with the drawing, which form a part of this application, and in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal, sectional elevation of an extinguisher having operating means for the extinguisher and for the alarm device constructed in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is the bottom plan View, partly broken away, of the construction shown in Fig. 1;
The invention briefly described consists primarily of an operating device for setting an extinguisher in operation and for simultaneously sounding an alarm. In the form of the invention illustrated the operating device consists of a hammer that is spring actuated and is normally held against operation by heat controlled means.
The hammer is arranged to strike and break the frangible portion of the iire extinguisher container.
Further details of the invention will appear from the following description.
In the form of the invention illustrated the operating device or hammer is mounted on the lower end of the extinguisher and is arranged to break a irangible portion thereof thus releasing liquid. The extinguisher illustrated comprises a container or bottle l5 having a sleeve or cap 'i9 secured to the lower end thereof in any suitable manner as by cementing the sleeve thereto. The sleeve or cap has a perforated lower end Ti. A irangible sealing disc 'i8 is cemented to the lower end oi" the cap and covers the portion 'il thus sealing the lire extinguisher liquid against escape from the container.
The sleeve or cap 16 is provided with a pair of lugs 89 and 8l between which extends a spindle 82. A hammer arm 83 is mounted on the spindle 82 and is provided at its outer end with a head which consists of a sleeve 85. An explosive cartridge 86 is mounted in the sleeve 85 and is held therein by a spring cap 81 which has a firing pin 88 at its outer end in engagement with the cartridge. A spring 8S is mounted on the spindle G2 and is arranged to actuate the hammer in a clockwise direction to Jcause the hammer to engage the frangible seal 78 and break the seal.
The hammer is normally held in retracted position by heat controlled means such as fusible links 90 and 9i. These links engage pins 92 and 93 which extend laterally from the hammer and at their other ends engage lugs S4 and 95 which are formed on the sleeve lt.
The device operates as follows: In case of fire the fusible links Si! and 9! will give way and the hammer will be spring actuated against the frangible sealing disc 18. The cartridge 86 will be fired by the firing pin 88 and the hammer will break the disc and release the liquid from the extinguisher.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that a simple and practical device has been designed for automatically and simultaneously operating an extinguisher and sounding the alarm in case of re. It will be obvious that the device is not limited in its use to any particular form of extinguisher but may be used to operate u extinguishers of many dierent types.
Although one specic embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claim.
What I claim is:
In combination, a fire extinguisher container having a frangible portion, a hammer comprising a pivoted arm and a sleeve at the free end thereof, a spring for actuating said arm in a direction to strike the frangible portion of the container, a cartridge in said sleeve having a flange seated on one end thereof, a spring clip for holding the cartridge in the sleeve, a firing pin carried by said clip and engaging said car- I tridge and arranged to rire the cartridge when the hammer strikes the container and heat controlled means for holding the hammer against actuation.
