FIRE-EXTINGUISHEB.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7
Application filed July 12, 1916. Serial No. 108,803.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. FITZGERALD, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Detroit, in the county of of Wayne and btate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to fire extinguishers of that type in which a fluid is stored within a container provided with manually-operable ejecting means. It is usual to provide such devices with a plunger pump for ejecting the fluid, but there is always danger that when there is occasion for use the pump may not be in operative condition; furthermore, to form the pump or ejector, a cylinder provided with a closely-fitting or packed piston is required, which materially increases the cost of the construction. It is the object of the present invention to simplify the construction, to insure operativeness of the same at all times and to maintain the fluid sealed until used. This I have accomplished by the use of a collapsible tube container for the fluid, in combination with manually-operable means for collapsing the tube to eject the fluid when required.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing one construction of my fire extinguisher;
Fig. 2 is a section, showing the retaining cap for the tube;
Fig. 3 is a cross section.
A is a collapsible tube formed of soft metal, being closed and sealed at one end, and provided at its opposite end with a discharge nozzle B, 'Wltll a suitable closure such as a cork C and removable cap D. E is a collapsing device for the tube, which, as shown in Fig. 1, comprises a pair of side members embracing the tube and hinged to each other at F, thev nozzle B projecting through an opening between the hinges. The opposite ends of these members form handles for grasping to squeeze the tube and to eject the fluid contents therefrom. Each of the members E is provided. with a pair of side flanges E, said flanges of one of said members being adapted to telescopically engage those of the other during colla sing of the tube. An end bearing portion for the tube is preferably provided, which,-as shown, is struck out from one of the members and is adapted to pass through an aperture H in the opposite member.
With the constructions above described, when the extinguisher is required for use, the cap is removed and the tube collapsed to eject the fluid contents through the nozzle.
'l/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A fire extinguisher, comprising a collapsible tube containing the extinguishing fluid and provided with a discharge nozzle, means for squeezing said tube forming a container therefor, comprising two'members embracing opposite sides of the tube, hinged to each other and flanged to telescopically engage each other as the tube is collapsed between said members, the ends of said members being prolonged to form operating handles, and a bearing for supporting the bottom of. the collapsible tube projecting laterally from one of said members.
2. A fire extinguisher, comprising a collapsible tube containing the extinguishing fluid and having a nozzle for discharging the fluid, means for squeezing said tube, comprising a pair of members hinged to each other at one end and centrally cut away Patented (Oct. e, rat a; I
for the passage of the nozzle, said members embracing the opposite sides of the tube and being flanged to telescopically engage each other as the tube iscollapsed between said members, operating handles formed by projecting the ends of said members, and a support for the bottom of the tube struck out from one of said members to project laterally therefrom.
3. A fire extinguisher, comprising a collapsible tube containing the extinguishing fluid and provided with a discharge nozzle, means for squeezing said tube comprising a pair of members hinged to each other at one end and cut away for the passage of said nozzle, said members being concaved to embrace opposite sides of the tube and to telescopically engage each other, a support for the bottom of the tube struck out from one of said members, the opposite member being apertured to receive said struck-out portion during the collapsing of the tube.
4. A fire extinguisher, comprising a collapsible tube containing the extinguishing fluid, and means for squeezing the fluid therefrom, comprising a pair of members hinged to each other and embracing the opposite sides of said tube, said members being flanged to telescopically engage each other as the tube is collapsed between the same and being extended to form operating handles.
5. A fire extinguisher, comprising a col-' handles and havin ortions retainin the container against displacement in a direction parallel to the hinge axis.
U. A lire extinguisher, comprising a collapsible container for an extinguishing fluid, and means for squeezing said container to eject the fluid therefrom comprising a pair of members hinged to each other and embracing opposite sides of said container, said members being extended to form handle.
memes lapsible container for the extinguishingfluid, and means for squeezing said container to eject the fluid comprising a pair of members hinged to each other and embracing 0pposite sides of said container, said members being extended to form handle portions, one of said members having a tongue struck out forming an' abutment preventing expansion or displacement of the container into the space betvveen the handle portions, and the 4 other member being slotted to allow passage of said tongue.
Intestimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN W. FITZGERALD.
