IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF HATS AND BONNETS 0F HORSE-HAIR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 3, [88, dated July 20, 1843.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. NOE,of the city and county and State of New York, have in vented or discovered a new andim portant Improvement in the Manufacture of Ladies and Gentlemens Hats and Caps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention or discovery consists in the application of horse-hairwhite horse-hair particularly, and all other colors, it necessary-4n the manufacture of ladies and gentlemens hats and caps. The advantage that my invention or discoveryhas over every other description of ladies and gentlemens hats or caps is their extreme lightness, durability, and beauty,and the facility with which they can be cleaned and altered renders them a valuable improvement and an object of importance to the public.
To enable others skilled in the artto use my improvement, invention, or discovery, I will proceed to describe its manufacture.
I take the horse-hairand make it into braid bymachinery,and then'form it into any shape which is desirable either for ladies bonnetsor gentlemens hats or caps, sewing the edges of the braid together with the same materialhorse-hair.
VVhatI claim as my improvement, invention, or discoveryin making ladies and gentlemens hats or caps of horse-hair braid, and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent, 1s-
In sewing the edges of the braid together with horse-hainwhir-h gives the hat or bonnet the appearance of being made in one piece, and also saves about one-thirdof the braid required for a hat or bonnet made in the ordinary way, and, moreover,makes them lighter, more durable, and also more pleasant to the wearer, and are not so liable to injury in the process of cleaning.
