UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
lVLLIAM C. VARING, JR., OF YONKERS, NElV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,706, dated July '2, 187B; application filed May 14, 187e.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. WARING, J r., of Yonkers, in the county of Testchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ref'er ence being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciieation.
This invention consists in a hat having its body composed of felt or other material, and having applied to its side crown a covering of silk, satin, plush, or any fancy or other fabric of different character from the body, and havin g; the union between the upper edge of said covering formed by a seam which is concealed by what is known as telescoping the crown, and thereby bringing the said upper edge between the folds of the telescoped part of the crown.
Figure 1 is a central section of a hat with my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the body, representingits condition after the application of the side-crown covering, but before the crown is telescoped, and illustrating by the dot-ted lines the change made by the subsequent telescopin g of the crown.
A is the body. B is the covering of the side crown. C is the seam uniting the upper edge of the covering B with the body.
The hat-body is iirst made, in the usual way, of felt or other material, with a crown high enough to admit of its being telescoped. The
covering B of the side crown is made in the form of a band, of a width or depth sufficient to allow of its upper edge being turned into the fold a of the telescoped crown. This covering is applied around the crown while the latter is extended to its full height, as shown in Fig. 2 in bold outline, and its upper edgeis then sewed to the crown all round the latter, as shown at C. The seam C may, however, be formed by the use of adhesive cement or otherwise, instead of by sewing. Then the covering has been thus attached, the top crown is depressed into the side crown, as `shown in Fig. 1 and in dotted outline in Fig. 2, in telescopic form, the seam C being turned over into the fold a of the telescope, and thereby concealed, so that the upper visible part of the coverin g presents a neat finish. The lower edge of the covering maybe concealed by a band applied to the exterior of the hat in the usual way.
I claim- A hat having a body of felt or other material. A, and having applied to its side crown a covering, B, united at its upper edge with the body by a seam, C, which is concealed by telescoping the crown, and bringing the said seam within the telescoped part of' the crown, sub stantially as herein described.
