INVENTQR. KANICHI 'KISHIKAWA LULaM W )2? PM I United States Patent 3,188,847 METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR RULLENG WIDE FLANGED BEAMS Kanichi Kishihawa, Tobata City, Japan, assignor to Yawata Iron 8: Steel (30., Ltd, Tokyo, Japan, a corporation of .lapan Filed May 10, 1962, Ser. No. 193,826 Claims priority, application Japan, May 15, 1961, 3 /17,369 1 (I'laim. (Cl. 72225) This invention relates to apparatus in a universal rolling mill chiefly for producing parallel wide flanged beams wherein vertical roll axes are in the plane formed by upper and lower horizontal roll axes.
In the construction of a conventional universal rolling mill, right and left vertical rolls will be idle and stationary when upper and lower horizontal rolls are driven, but will be driven by a frictional force when a material is bitten in. In such case, as the vertical rolls have an inertia, they will not be able to reach a normal rolling speed as soon as the material is bitten in but a slip will be caused between the roll and material during the acceleration and the vertical rolls will be worn and damaged. Further, due to the lag during the acceleration, the advancing speed of the material will be quickly reduced and the rolling will be interrupted by the formation of a loop. Further, due to the shortage of the biting capacity, the biting will not be eiiected smoothly and the rolling time will be lengthened. This has been remarkable specifically in a continuously rolling method.
We have recognized such defects of the conventional method, have minutely analyzed the action of the vertical rolls in the universal rolling mill at the time of biting in the material, have studied the defect and limit of rolling without preparative driving in the conventional continuously rolling method and have completed the present invention.
An object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for preparatively driving vertical rolls in a universal rolling mill chiefly of a continuously rolling type.
The object of using the apparatus of the instant invention is to protect the vertical rolls and to assure the normal rolling by preparatively driving the the vertical rolls to substantially the rolling speed, the exit speed of the workpiece, before the material is bitten in.
.Other objects of the present invention will become clear from the contents described in the following.

FIGURE 1 is an elevation of another embodiment of a universal rolling mill provided with preparatively driven vertical rolls.
FIGURE 2 is a plan view of an essential part of the embodiment illustrated in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a sectioned view on line A-B in FIG- URE 2.
The present invention shall be detailed in the following with reference to the drawings.
In FIGURE 1, the vertical roll 9 is preparatively driven with high pressure water. The details are shown in FIGURES 2 and 3. In this embodiment, a proper number of high pressure water receiving grooves 18 are made on the vertical roll 9. High pressure water is fed through jetting holes 1'7 made through the housing. The number of revolutions of the vertical roll is adjusted by varying the pressure of high pressure water. In the light of experiments, preparative driving can be well eiiected with a high pressure water jetting pressure of 30 kg./cm. and an amount of water of 0.09 m. /sec. When the vertical roll 9 is provided with ball-bearings, there may be only one high pressure water jetting hole.
The preparatively driving method for vertical rolls according to the present invention can be applied to the special universal rolling mill wherein a vertical roll'housing is integral with the horizontal roll stand and also applied to a simplified vertical roll device which is mostly used in a combination rolling apparatus train and wherein the vertical roll housing is separated from the main stand.
What I claim is:
An apparatus for rolling wide flanged beams by means of a continuous universal rolling mill, in which vertical rolls reside in the plane formed by upper and lower horizontal rolls, comprising a vertical roll housing with high pressure holes, through which holes high pressure Water may be jetted immediately onto the surface of the vertical rolls, the vertical rolls having a number of high pressure water receiving grooves, thereby to preliminarily rotate the vertical rolls by means of the jets of high pressure water.
