UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC A. ABBOT, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
ATTACHMENT FOR OVEN-DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,155, dated May 19, 1885.
Application filed November 18, 1884. No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Isaac A. ABBOT, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Attachment to Oven-Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved attachment to oven-doors to permit watching the contents of the oven, and also for showing the temperature in the oven.
The invention consists in the combination, with an oven-door having an opening, of a frame secured on the door and holding a pane of glass or mica, and of a thermometer hinged to the frame inside of the pane.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of an oven provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is an outside view of the frame of the attachment. Fig. 3 is an inside View of the same. Fig. 4. is a sectional plan view of the door and attachment.
The oven-door A is provided at its middle with an opening, B, along the rim of which a metal frame, 0, is secured by screws or otherwise on the outer surface of the door, and in the said frame a pane, D, of glass, mica, or other analogous transparent material is held.
On one upright of the frame 0 a graduated thermometer-strip, E, is hinged, on which a thermometer-tube, F, is secured. The thermometer-strip E is held parallel with the glass pane D by a spring, G, so that the thermometer can easily be seen through the pane D.
The frame 0 and pane D, being held securely 0 on the door, prevent the escape of heat and permit of watching the articles in the oven, and the thermometer shows the degrees of heat in the oven. The thermometer-strip is held in place by the spring G, and, as it is hinged, it can be swung back for cleaning it, &c.
The abovedescribed attachment can be applied on various kinds of stove or oven doors.
I am aware that an oven-door has been provided with a pane of glass held thereto by a frame bolted to the inside of the door and provided with a vertical cross-piece. To the cross-piece adjacent to the pane a thermometer wassecured by looped wires, and I do not claim any such construction as of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with an oven-door, of 60 a thermometer hinged on the same, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with an oven-door having an opening, of a frame secured on the door and holding a pane of glass or mica, and 65 of a thermometer hinged on the frame, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with an oven door having an opening, of a frame secured on the door and holding a pane of glass or mica, a thermometer hinged to the frame inside of the glass, and a spring for holding the thermometer parallel with the glass, substantially as herein shown and described.
ISAAC A. ABBOT.
