SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,997, dated May 19, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be itknown that I, IRA W. HoLLErT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes or Pails, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in paper pails or boxes, and more particularly to certain improvements upon the paper pail or box heretofore patented to me under date of June 12, 1883, in Letters Patent No. 279,244. My present invention consists in providing the box with a hinged paper cover having a tongue or projection adapted to fit in a suitable slot oropeningin one sideofthepailorboxnear the top thereof, and which tongue is secured therein by a metal binding-clamp on the end of the tongue longer than said slot or opening, so as to thus secure the cover to the pail or box by a hinged connection. The opposite end or edge of the cover is provided with a similar tongue or projection which has no metal binding-strip and which fits in a cone spondi'ng slot on the other side of the pail or box.

In the accompanying drawings,which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicatelike parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper pail or box provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the cover. Fig. 3 is a detail side View, showing the slot or opening in the side of the pail or box, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the hinged connection.

In the drawings, A represents the paper pail or box. In the opposite sides B of the box are formed notches at the top thereof; and b is a sheet-metal binding strip or clamp secured to the top edge of the sides B and extending across said notches, thus forming the slots or openings 1) in each side of the box.

0 represents the paper cover, the opposite ends or edges of which are provided with tongues or projections c and 0. One of these tongues is inserted through one of the slots b in the side of the box, and then a metal binding To give the cover additional stiffness and strength, so as to preserve its form and shape, I prefer .to secure to its edges metal binding strips or clamps c In closing the cover the tongue 0, which is also, of course, flexible and easily bent, is inserted through the slot on the opposite side of the box and the cover thus secured in position.

The slots 1) should be longer than the tongues c c, and also the slots should be considerably deeper than the paper forming said tongues, preferably about as shown in the drawings, so as to give freedom of movement to the cover in opening and closing the same.

I claim 1. The, combination of a paper box A, having slots 1) in its side, with hinged paper cover 0, having tongue or projections 0, provided with a guard,c ,to secure the same in said slot, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of paper box A, having sides B, furnished with notches at their tops,

and metal bindingstrips 1), extending across said notches to form slots or openings in said sides, with hinged paper cover 0, having tongues c c, said tongue 0 being provided with a metal binding-clampmfllonger than said slot to secure said tongue in the same, substantially as specified.

3. The combination, with box A, having sides B, provided with slots 1), ofhinged paper cover 0, provided with tongues c and c, said tongue 0 having metal binding-strip 0 longer than said slot, and metal bindings 0 on the side edges of said cover, substantially as specified.
