WlNDOW-BLlND-SLAT FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,861, dated April 1%, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN M. VAN DYKE, a citizen of the United States,residing at Washington, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vindow-Blind-Slat Fastenings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My inventionis applicable to window-blinds wherein a frame is provided with panelsformed of aseries of flexible slats pivoted to the stiles of the frame to extend transversely across the shutter and coupled together by an upright bar, which afi'ords means for oscillating the slats to open and close them, and thereby admit or exclude the light.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple device for locking the slats in any desired position, and thus prevent them from rattling and from being disturbed from their adjusted position by the action of the wind.

The improvement consists in a metal plate provided with means for attachment to one of the slats of a series, and a clamping-screw arranged to pass through the plate and impinge against the frame of the blind, or against a metal plate secured thereto.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a flexible-slat windowblind provided with my improvements; Fig. 2, a similar view, upon an enlarged scale, of the fastener detached from the slat; and Fig. 3, a similar view of the segmental bearingplate.

The blind or shutter A is of well-known construction. I

The frame consists of upright pieces A and transverse pieces A, mortised together.

The ends of the slats B are provided with pintles I), which are supported and turn freely in bearings in the inner sides of the upright frame-pieces A, and are coupled together by a bar, G, united to the edges of the slats by staples c c, to permit the slats to be simultaneously opened and closed. To one of the slats of the series is secured a fastener-plate, D, provided with a lug or foot, d, and formed with holes ti d, through which wood-screws 50 d pass, to hold the fastener-plate securely to the face of the slat at the end thereof.

The fastener-plate D is held to project at right angles from the face of the slat, and is provided with a screw threaded hole, (2 through which a correspondinglythreaded screw, E, passes, and may be adjusted to bear or impinge tightly against the inner side of the upright A and hold the slat in any desired position.

A segmental metal plate, F, provided with screw-holes f f, may be secured by wood-screws to the inner surface of the blindirame piece A, concentrically with the pivots of the slat, and in proper position to provide a bearing for the end of the thumb-screw.

The plate F may be formed with indentations ff f to receive the end of the thumb-screw and provide additional means for locking the slat securely in any desired position.

The slats may all be held by a single fastener secured to one of the series, and simple means may thus be provided for effectually preventing the slats from shifting or rattling, and thereby causing annoyance.

Various changes may be made in the shape of the fastener-plate without departing from my invention. 7

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A window-blind-slat fastening consisting of a plate, D, provided with a foot, d, adapted to be fastened to the slat, and a clampingscrew, E, arranged to pass through the plate and impinge against the frame of the blind, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a window-blind frame, A, of a movable slat, B, bar 0, plate D, secured to the slat at an angle therewith, and a clamping screw, E, arranged to pass through the plate and impinge against the frame, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with a movable-slat window-blind, of a plate secured to one of the slats, provided with a clamping-screw, and a plate, F, secured to the frame of the blind to provide a bearing for the clampingscrew, substantially as described.
