To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. JOHNSON, of Point Pleasant, in the county of Ocean and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Shutter-Bower, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in fastenings for shutters and blinds, which are known as bowers, and. the object of my invention is to produce a very cheap, simple and strong fastener, which may be applied to any ordinary blind or shutter, and which is adapted to hold the blind or shutter open in such a way that it cannot become loosened by the action of the wind, and is also adapted to hold the blinds at an angle to the window to enable them to act as an awning.

To these ends, my invention consists in a shutter bower, the construction of which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a building having blinds thereon, shown in open position and held so by my improved bower. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view illustrating the manner in which the blinds are held at an angle to the window; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of one of the parts of the shutter bower.

The shutter fastener or bower is composed of two like parts or fasteners, each part consisting of a curved bar, 10, and locking device, 12. The convex side of the bar, 10, is placed next the blind or shutter when the fastener is attached thereto, this bar being pivoted near the center, as shown at 11, bya screw which also passes through the enlarged end of the locking device, 12. The latter is a short bar, having one end reduced, and constructed to engage the curved bars, 10. A small screw is preferably inserted through the reduced portion of the device to hold the latter rigidly in place on the blind stile. One end 13 of the bar 10 is adapted to engage a serves as a handle to enable the bar to be tilted on its pivot.

The ends 13 of the fasteners are transversely grooved, as shown at 15 in Fig. 3, the grooves being produced on the convex side of each bar, and in this way when two blinds 17, to which the fasteners are attached are nearly closed in front of the window, the grooved end of one of the bars maybe made to engage the reduced end of the locking device of the other bar, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and thus the blinds are held in this position, so that they shade the window and at the same time permit perfect ventilation.

The fasteners are fastened to the outer stile and inner side of each blind, and as high up as they can be and still permit of being easily reached, and the hooks 13 which engage the fasteners are firmly secured to an adjacent portion of the building (see Fig.1), and when a blind is thrown open the curved bar 10 is.

turned at right angles to the stile of the blind and into engagement with the hook 13, the curved end of the bar acting as a cam and causing the blind to be held very firmly against the building. When the blind is to be closed the handle 14 of the bar is grasped and turned downward so as to lift the outer end of the hook 13*.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved shutter-bower, composed of two curved bars, each having a pivot hole, and an end extension which serves as a handle and, on the convex side, two notches, or transverse grooves, and the locking device, having at one end a transverse perforation to receive a fastening screw, the other end being reduced and adapted to engage any of the aforesaid grooves, as shown and described.
