UNiTED STATES PATENT rrrcn.
ANDREW JACKSON SWEENEY, OF PANA, ILLINOIS.
SCOOP-BOARD FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,676, dated April 14, 1885. l Application filed August 1l, 1884. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. SWEENEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pana, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, haveinventedanew and useful Scoop- Board, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to scoop-boards for wagons; and it has for its object to provide at a slight cost a board which may be readily attached to or detached from a wagon, one that will be adjustable to different widths of wagon, sand to provide a device of this character of simple and durable construction.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view oi' a scoop constructed in accordance with my invention, .showing the saine applied. Fig. 2 is a bottoni view. Fig. 3 is a section on the line x x ot' Fig. 2, and Fig. Ll is a transverse section taken on the line y y of Fig. 2.
In the accompanyingdrawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures, A represents a wagon; B, the bolster thereof, and C the axle, all of which are of the usual well-known construction. To the under side of the wagonbody, at the rear end of the saine, is secured a'strip, D, which is provided near each end with an opening, c.
On aline with the openings c of the crossstrip D, upon the bolster' B, are provided openings b, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
E represents the scoop-board, which is provided on its rear side with bracing-strips, which are secured thereto by screws or equivalent fastening. Upon the upper side of the scoop, at the ends of the saine, are provided side strips, F, which extend beyond the forward end ol' the board, their ends being slightly tapering. One of these side strips is rigid upon the scoop, while the other is laterally adjustable, the adj ustrnent being accomplished as follows: Slots are provided in the scoop near the front and rear end of the same, and adjacent to the side, the screws connecting the side strip and bracing-strip located divcesses of said strip.
rectly beneath the saine passing through said slots, thus allowing the said side strip to be moved laterally the length of the slot, from which it will be seen that the scoop may be used upon different widths of Wagons.
The operation is as follows: The side strips are passed above the strip secured to the under side of the wagon-body, fitting in the re- The ends of said side strips are then passed between the axle and the bolster. In this manner the scoop-board is firmly and securely held against movement, and affords a perfectly sai'e platform for the operator to stand upon. The side strips, extending upwardly above the scoop-board, prevent corn or grain from dropping over or olf the board. Moreover, the operator stands upon a level with the door of the wagon, so
that the unloading of a wagon is greatly facilitated. The side strips may be as wide as desired, it being essential only that they should be of a size at their outer ends capable of fitting between the axle and bolster, and to pass over the strip on the under side of the wagon.
Having I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A scoop-board provided with attachingstrips, one ot' which is laterally adjustable, as set forth.
2. A scoop-board provided with attachingstrips, one ol' which is laterally adjustable, and bracing-strips secured to the under side of said board, as set forth.
3. The combination, with ascoop-board provided on one side, near its ends, with slots, of strips, one of said strips being secured. to the board by means of screws or bolts passing through a strip on the under side of the board and through said slots, whereby the said strip may be laterally adj usted, as set fort-h.
4. The combination, with a wagon, of a scoop-board having one of its attaching-strips laterally adjustable, and adapted to fit between the bolster and axle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. ANDREW JACKSON SWEENEY.
