Description

Um'rnn vSrn'rns PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES PASCHAL, QF CAMDEN, ARKANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BODIES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,709, dated November 5, 1878 application filed July 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES H. PAsoHAL, of Camden, in the county of Ouachita and State of Arkansas, have invented anew and useful Improvement in-Wagon-Bodies, of which the following is a specication:
My invention relates particularly to a novel construction of the frame and sides of a wagonbody, for the purpose'of facilitating the transportation of bales of cotton thereon.
The invention consists, essentially, in aframe provided with spurs projecting therefrom for engagement with the bales to prevent them from slipping, and the combination therewith of removable extension side and end pieces, for enabling the wagon to be used for other purposes when not employed for hauling cotton-bales; also, in an extension of the frame longitudinally, to form a feed-trough fol` the horses employed to draw the vehicle.
The accompanying drawings represent a wagon-body constructed according to my invention, Figure l being a top view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A represent the side pieces of the frame, and B B the end pieces, which four pieces are secured together by bolts D D, passing through the side pieces outside of the end' pieces and fastened by nuts.
The end pieces B B have their ends inserted in grooves a in the side pieces, by which means they are held in place and prevented from being moved laterally, and at the same time may be raised vertically when necessary.
The frame is provided with a bottom or floor, C, which mayk extend under the lower edges of the side pieces A, so that said side pieces may rest thereon; or it may extend only to the inner surfaces of the side pieces, so that the lower edges of said side pieces may rest directly on cross-bars E. To the inner surfaces of the side pieces are attached, by screws or bolts, a number of iron bars, Gr, each of which has its lower end formed into a screw-threaded shank, g, which passes through one of the cross-bars E under the frame, and is secured thereto by a nut. There may be any suitable number of the cross-bars E, and a corresponding number of iron bars, Gr, are attached to pieces A A and floor C extended rearward beyond the rear end piece, B, and provided with a removable end piece, B2, itting in grooves a2 in the side pieces. This extension serves as a feed-trough for the horses .employed to draw the wagon.
H represents the removable extension-piece, which is provided with cleats h lz., extending beyond the lower edge, for engagement with staples c' c' on the outer surface of one of the side pieces, A. This extension side piece is not so thick as the side piece A, in order to enable it to be placed on the upper edge of said piece A, outside of the spurs f, and have its outer surface ush with the outer surface of said piece A. The inner surface of the ex- .tension-piece H is provided near each end with two battens, l l, secured thereto by screws or bolts. These battens serve to brace and strengthen the extension-piece, and also form a groove for the reception of the end oi' an end piece similar to the end pieces B. Two of these extension-pieces H, two end pieces similar to the end pieces B, and two bolts or rods similar to the bolts D are provided to accompany the frame above described.
- When the wagon is used for hauling cotton, the bales are placed on the upper edges of the side pieces A, so that the spurs f will engage with the bales and prevent them from slipping. The extension-pieces are placed on the top of the bales, and may be used to protect them from Wet in rainy weather. After deli-vering a load of cotton, the extension pieces are placed in position, and a wagon-body of increased depth is at once produced.
The frame and extension pieces may be of any suitable length. The side pieces A may be about eight inches wide, and the extensionpieces Habout ten inches wide, so that the 1 ent-ire Wagon-body, with the extension-pieces in place, may be about eighteen 'inches deep.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y 1. The spurs f, in combination with the side pieces A, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
`grooves a2, end piece B and grooves a, side pieces A A7 and floor C, to form a eedtmugh, as herein shown and described.
