Description

(No Model.)
L. L. WELSH.
' WAGON STANDARD. No. 353,886; PatentedDeo. 7, 1886.
M I I UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
LEE L. WELSH, OF BROWVNWOOD, TEXAS.
WAGON-STANDARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,836, dated December 7, 1886.
Application filed September 16, 1886. Serial No. 213,688.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEE L. WVELSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brownwood, in the county of Brown and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vagon-Standards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to standards for wagons, having for its object the provision of an article which shall be vertically adjustable to adapt it to any and all sizes of wagon-bodies, or for use in connection with an ordinary body when it is provided with a large load.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts relatively to each other, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a wagon-body provided with my improved extension-standard. Fig. 2 is a transverse central sectional view taken through the bolsterand standards. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the looking device. Fig. 4 isan enlarged vertical section.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the bolster provided with standards B B, preferably mortised therein. The standards B are hollow, and are provided with extensions 0 O, which have vertical movement therein and are provided on one side with rack-teeth or serrations e, by means of which and the looking device, hereinafter described, the vertical adjustment of the extension is effected.
D designates a gravitating-catch,consisting of the pawl d, mounted on a trunnion, d,which has bearings in the standard, and which is provided with a weighted handle, d disposed at a right angle to the pawl proper, so that (No model.)
when the handle is in a horizontal position the pawl is in a vertical position, or pointing upward. When released, however, gravity, acting upon the weighted handle, causes the same to fall and assume a vertical position, which throws the pawl out into the groove in which slides the extension 0, so as to catch in the rack-teeth of the latter.
The operation of my improved extension being obvious hardly needs further description. WVhen it becomes necessary to increase the height of the standard, the extension is simply elevated to the desired degree, the pawl or rack slipping over the rack-teeth, when it will be automatically looked at any point by reason of the weighted handle d on the shaft or trunnion of the pawl.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a hollow standard and an'extension having vertical movement in said standard, of a gravity-catch adapted to bite against teeth or serrations on said extension in order to maintain the same in an extended position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with ahollow standard and an extension having vertical movement in said standard, of a pawl mounted in hearings in the standard and a weighted handle connected to the pawl, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
