AI' P. DUMPING WAGON.
No. 535,460. v Patented Mar. 12, 1895 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER P. REED, OF LINCOLN, INDIANA.
DUMPING-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,460, dated March 12, 1895. Application filed July 9,1894. Serial No. 1 N m l-l To all whom) it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALEXANDER P. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping Wagon-Bodies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to an improved dumping body for wagons and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1, is a side view of part of the wagon body. Fig. 2, is a bottom view of the wagon body. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of parts of the invention which will be explained hereinafter.
To the longitudinal perpendicular sides of the wagon body are pivoted the elbow arms 1, 1, the upper ends of which are connected by a rod or pitman 2; said arms being pivoted to said pitman. The rod 3, provided with a turnbuckle 4, connects said pitman 2, with the end of the crank arm 5, which in turn is journaled at the end of the body and is operated by the lever arm 6.
To the lower end of each elbow arm 1, is pivoted a rod 8. Said rods 8, are each provided with aturn-buckle 9. To the lower ends of each rod 8, is pivoted the upper ends of the rods 10, and 11.
The bottom of the wagon body is composed of a number of pivoted panels 12, 12, extending transversely across the same. Each end of a panel 12, is provided with a U -shaped iron 13, the ends of which extend slightly beyond the end of the panel, and one end of each iron 13, is adapted to rest in a suitable bearing 14,
attached to the longitudinal sides of the body. The bearings 14, are provided with an elongated perforation 15 said perforation extending at an oblique to a perpendicular, or slanting at an angle. One end of each U-shaped iron 13, rests'in the elongated perforation 15, and to the other end of the U-shaped iron is pivoted the lower end of the rod 10, or 11, as the case may be.
By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the extreme bearings 14, are designed to support one panel only while the mean bearings 14, are each adapted to support two panels. The device is operated as follows:When the load is in the body the different parts are in the positions as indicated by the heavy lines in Fig. 1, and when the load is to be dumped the lever 6, is thrown back, and the other parts will assume the positions as indicated by the dotted lines. Thus the panels 12, are turned up on their edges and the load passes out of the body between said panels.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Ina dumping wagon body having a number of pivoted panels located in the bottom thereof; a device for operating said panels consisting of the elbow arms pivoted to the side of the body; the pitrnan connecting the ends of said elbow arms, the perpendicular rods pivoted to the other ends of the elbow rods, and
the rods pivoted at one end to said perpen--
