JOHN PORTER, OF CON VIS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAv-RAcKs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,262, dated August 14, 1877 application led May 28,1877. y
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN PORTER, of Gonvis, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Racks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication. My invention relates to the employment of what I term bolster-pieces A and B, pivoted to the under side of the forward. cross-beam C of an ordinarily-constructed skeleton hayraek. The inner ends of said bolster-pieces are capable of being shifted and bolted either at a right angle Or in an inclined position with said cross-beam, as shown in the drawings.
My Objectis to cheapen the construction and make the hay-rack equally adaptable to a bob-sleigh or wagon, without theinconvenience of chaining down when the rack is used on a bob-sleigh. 4
The general construction of my hay-rack does not materially differ from those now in use, with the exception that the converging bed-pieces D and E extend the whole length of the hay-rack, and are bolted to the head block F. The standard is pivoted to the headblock, so that it rests against the upper crossrail of the rack, and the lower ends abut against the ends of said bed-pieces, making this portion of the rack doubly strong.
The bolster-pieces are set at an angle, when the rack is used on a wagon, to allow the cramping of the wheels, and set out or at right angles with the cross-beams, when the rack is used on a bob-sleigh, to keep the rack from tipping on the bolsters, and to accommodate the rack to bob-sleighs of different lengths.
I disclaim in a hay-rack the cross-beams,
rails, and converging bed-pieces, as they are not new; but
What I do claim as my invention is- The bolster-pieces A and B, pivoted to the cross-beam G, and capable of being adjusted and bolted either at a right angle with or in an inclined position to the cross-beam C, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afx my signature in presence of two JOHN PORTER.
witnesses.
Witnesses WORTH H. BENTLEY, GEO. A. JOHNSON.
