TONGUE-SUPPO RT FOR WAGONS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,246, dated February 17, 1885.

Be it known that I,WILLIAM BENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful device or contrivance for holding up the Tongues or Poles of IIagons, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention consists of alever at the back of the front bolster, and by means of a clevis running through two holes in the front bolster connecting with the tongue or pole of the wagon.

The object of my improvement is so to hold up the tongue that there will be no increased friction on the reach, sway-bar, or any other part of the wagon. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a wagon without the wheels. Fig. 2 represents the back bolster of a wagon with a halfelliptic spring attached instead of a spiral spring, as in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents an attachment of the spring to the reach instead of to the back bolster, as in Fig. '1.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In Fig. 1 the spiral spring D is attached by a hook and staple, 13, to the back bolster, I, of the wagon. This spring is connected by a chain, B, with a lever, L, whose fulcrum is K, connected with the lever L, and passing through (No model.)

the front bolster, H, on each side of the kingbolt is a clevis, m, connected by the chain B with A, the tongue or pole of the wagon. The rod 11 runs through the spring D, and is held by a nut, e, which may be tightened or loosened, as may be necessary to shorten or lengthen the chain B. There is also a swivel, n, for the same purpose in front of the front bolster,so as to raise or lower the wagon-tongue to any height required.

By means of the lever L the weight of the tongue is thrown back of the front bolster, H, so that it does not wear on the reach or swaybar, as it otherwise would. I

The combination of the lever L with the spring D and connecting-chain B, as shown in annexed drawings, by which the weight of the tongue is thrown back of the front bolster, so as to prevent friction on the reach, sway-bar, or other part of the wagon, all sub stantially as set forth.
