IMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLE-TONGUE SUPPORTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,969, dated June 29,1875; application filed April 24, m5.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BURNSIDE, of Prairieburg, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Tongue Supports, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a top view of a portion of a wagon-gearing to which my improvement has been applied, parts being broken away to show the construction. Fig, 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line 00 50, Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a View of the rear end of the tongue enlarged.

The ob ect of this invention is to furnish a simple, convenient, and effective device for supporting the tongue by the draft, and thus relieve-the horses necks from the weight of said tongue.

The invention consists in the combination of the hook-plate, the chain, the pulley, and

the adjustable plate with the king-bolt, the

' hammer-strap, and the tongue, as hereinafter fully described.

A are the fore-wheels; B, the forward axle;

the sand board; F, the forward bolster; G, the wagon body or boX. H is the tongue, I is the king-bolt, and J is the reach, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. K is a small plate, which is placed upon the kin g-bolt I, in the space between the axle B and the sand-board E, in which the forward end of the reach J is placed. Upon the for ward end of the plate K is formed a hook to receive the rear end of the chain L, the forward end of which is attached to the rear end of the hammer-strap M, which slides in keepers attached to the tongue H, the hammer or doublettree bolt passing through a short slot in the said tongue H. The chain L passes over a pulley, N, pivoted to upwardlyprojecting lugs formed upon a plate, 0,attached to the rear end of the tongue H. The plate is slotted to receive the screws or bolts by which it is secured in place, so that by loosening the said screws or bolts the plate 0, and with it the pulley N, may .be moved up and down, as required. The chain L may be kept in place upon the pulley N by the bow P, which passes over the said pulley. By this construction, when the draft is applied, the downward pressure of the chain L upon the pulley N raises the tongue, and supports it, so as to relieve the horses necks from its weight, and hold it raised so long as the draft-strain is continued.

Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the hook-plate K, chain L, pulley N, and adjustable plate 0 with the king-bolt I, the sliding hammerstrap M, connected with the whiftletree, and the tongue H, substantially as herein shown and de scribed.
