UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADLER O. OLAUSEN, 'OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINN., ASSIGNOR OF TWVO-THIRDS TO J. O. SLAFTER AND A. A. POND, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED LETTER-SCALE, ENVELOPE-OPENER, AND CIGAR-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,801, dated March 31, 1885.
Application filed November 18, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADLER G. OLAUSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Letter- Scale, Envelope-Opener, and Cigar- Outter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows the device closed and worn as a watch-charm. Fig. 2 shows it in position for weighing aletter. Fig. 3 shows it as I 5 used for opening envelopes.
My invention relates to a letter-scale, &c., combined with a charm to be worn about the person, preferably on a watch-guard; and it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, A represents the rear plate or body of the charm, which may be made plain or ornamental, as desired.
On the outer edge of the plate A are formed two semicircular notches, B B, about equally distant from the point of suspension 0. The object of these notches or indentations will be hereinafter explained. Across the front face of the plate is formed a graduated scale, 0 b, marked to indicate ounces and half-ounces,
as shown in the drawings.
Pivoted to the plateA at the point a is the flat spring steel open ring D, having its inner periphery sharpened to a fine cuttingedge, and the open ends brought to an acute angle at the point of junction, as shown in Fig. 1. The outer periphery of the flat ring has two semicircular indentations, e 0, corresponding to and exactly registering with the two indentations formed in the plate A. A point, d, of one of these indentations serves as an index to mark off on the scale I) the weight of a letter or other article being weighed, as shown in Fig. 2. The opposite indentation, e, is only designed to correspond with the indentation B in the plate for harmony in appearance. The indentation B in the plate is designed to receive the nib or the points may or may not be made to slightly 6o.
lap each other, and by pivoting the ring, as shown and described, it is evident that the article being weighed will find its own center of gravity, when the weight will be indicated on the scale, as shown in Fig. 2:
\Vhen it is desired to open an envelope, it will only be necessary to spring open the ring and pass either point into the corner of the envelope, when the sharp edge of the ring will act the same as the keen edge of a knife- I blade.
The hook for attaching the charm may be constructed in any ofthe well-known ways for attaching it to the clothing or to the guard of a watch, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a combined letter-scale,watch-charm, &e., the plate A, provided with the scale b and the pivot O, in combination with the pivoted open ring D, provided with one or more indentations, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a combined letter-scale,watch-charm, &c., the plate A, provided with the graduated scale I), the pivot O, and one or more indentations, in combination with a flat open springsteel ring having its inner periphery sharpened and provided with one or more indeno tations, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ADLER O. OLAUSEN. \Vitnesses:
A. E. HAMMOND, L. E. KELLEY.
