Description

J.odel.)
WITNES SES:
` WB. CLEMENT.
REFAI'ERP0111?` THE BANDS 0F NEGKSGARFS.
INVENTOR: im Ke lmy invention.
UNITED STATES PATENI RETAINER FOR THE BANDS OF NECKSCARFS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,111, dated March 17, 1,885. Application filed January 13, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it mwy'corwern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM B. l LEMENT, a citizen ofthe United states, resid ng in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Retainers for the Bands of Neckscarfs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side `elevation of retainers for the band of a neckscarf embodying Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a retainer opposite to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section in line as zr, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a section in line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a view of'one of the caps of the retainer in dat condition.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. My invention consists of a retainer `for the band ot' a neckscarf adapted to prevent said band from rising, and cause the band to set easily in position without severe strain on the collar, as will be hereinafter `fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a neckscarf, and B the neckband thereof, both shown by dotted lines, of well-known form.
In the length of the band areinserted pieces of elastic material or springs, C, which, as will be seen, form continuities of the band, the same being connected with caps D, of metal or other suitable material, which are secured to the band by spurs E, although it is evident that they may be `pierced so as to be sewed or riveted to the band, and any other suitable means of connection may be adopted. n
Rising from the lower ends of the caps on the hacks or inner sides thereof are clips F, which set ont therefrom so that they may receive the lower edge of they collar,A each cap having a clip, which is cut out of tiye material of the cap, or the clip may be made separate from the cap and secured thereto in any des sirable manner; but, if desired, only one of the caps may be provided with a clip.
The number of Aelastic pieces orrsprings C may be varied, so as to be located either at the back or sides of the band when fitted on the collar, and when the band is thus fitted or located and tightened and secured in the head of the scarf it exerts agentle pressure on the collar and conforms `to the motion of the same due to movement-s of the neck and body of the wearer,- thus also avoiding uncomfortable strain on the collar. The clips are also inserted under the edge of the collar after the manner of hooks, and thus the neckband is prevented from rising on the collar, and its proper location thereon thereby as- Sured.
In order to connect the elastic pieces or springs with the caps, each of the latter is formed of a plate substantially like that shown in Fig. 5,with or without the spurs I) and clips F. AOne side of the plate has at opposite places lips G, which are turned at a right angie to that shown in said Fig. 5, and the plate bent in tubular form, as shown in the other figures, its ends being secured, and its lips then pinching or clamping the ends ofthe elastic pieces or entering the coils of the springs, both lips acting in opposite direc tions, whereby a strong and reliable connection is provided l'orthe elasticpieces or springs with the caps.
Having thus described Inyinvcntion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A necksearf or cravat having a retainer consisting of a cap, D, having a clip, F, the said cup being so formed as to encircle the band of the said scarf, and the clip formed on one end ofthe cap and bent outward so as to be hooked under the collar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the band of a neckscarf, of an elastic piece or spring, and caps connected with the ends of the latter, said caps being secured to the band and forming with the elastic piece or spring a continuity of the band. substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. A neckband having a cap of tubular form provided with lips which clamp an elastie piece or spring which is a continuity of said band, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A retainer for the band of a neckscarf, consisting ofa cap of tubular form provided with a clip for engagement with the lower edge of a collar, and lips which clamp an elastic piece or spring which is a continuity of said band, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
