NITED STATES JUDSON L. THOMSON, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
AT TACHING SHOE-CLASPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,256, dated March 3, 1885.
Application filed September 23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it 71mg concern Be it known that I, JUnsoN L. THOMSON, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and usel'ul Improvements in ShoeOlasps, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and
exact description.
This invention has reference to the class of shoe-clasps in which two metal plates attached to the straps or quarters of an overshoe are made to interlock with each other bymeans of a tongue hing d to one of said plates and passing through a slot in the other plate.
The invention consists in a certain novel method of securing the aforesaid clasp to the straps or quarters of the overshoe. all as hen-- inafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is side view of a shoe-clasp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, illustrating more fully the attachment of the clasp t) the straps or quarters of the shoe. Figs. 3 and 4 are detached plan views of the attaching-plate of the clasp, and Fig. 5 is a perspective "iew of an overshoe provided with my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B represent the two main plates or attaching-plates of the shoe-clasp, the plate A being designed to be attached to one of the straps or quarters of the shoe, and provided with the usual transverse slots, by which it interlocks with the main plate B, designed to be attached to the other strap or quarter of the shoe, the interlocking of said plate being effected by the tongue T, hinged on the forward or free end of the plate B in any suitable and well-known manner. It is the attachment of said plates A and B to the straps or quarters of the overshoe which my invention has special reference to, the object being to strengthen said attachment and to maintain the aforesaid plates in their proper position on the straps; and to accomplish this object I pro vide the plate 13 with an opening, a, near the forward or free end thereof, and form the plate the. twofold portion of the strap within the perforations of the extension I), and back of said extension, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The plate A, I provide with a similar rearward extension, I), back of the usual attaching-slot, a, and in said extension is an opening-c, similar to the opening 0 of the plate B. The plate A is attached to the strap of the shoe'in the same manner as the plate B, as before described. To effect the attachinent in an expeditious and neat manner, I cement the folded portion of the strap to gether within the perforation of the extension b and back of the same, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The rear portion of the two plates A and B are thus embraced in the folds of the straps and securely retained therein by the union of the embracing portion of the straps within the rear openings, 0 0, which attachment securely maintains the aforesaid plates in line with the straps.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is- The within-described method of securing a shoe-clasp to the strap or quarter of an overshoe, consisting in passing the end of the strap through an opening in the attaching-plate near its free or forward end, then folding it back upon itself to embrace the rear portion of said plate, and uniting the twofold portionsof the strap within an opening in the embraced portion of the plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 20th day of September, 1881.
J UDSON L. THOMSON.
