CORSET-STEEL FASTENING.

@PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,074, dated March 3, 1885.

Be it known that I, LUornN HILL, of North Brookeld, county of W'orcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Corset-Steel Fastenings, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, isaspecitication, like letters on the drawings representinglike parts.

Heretofore sheet-metal eye-pieces of corsetsteels 'have had attached to or formed with them spring jaws or arms open and movable at their free ends to spring back of the stud of the opposed steelto prevent the corset from becoming unt'astened.

The object of my invention is to cheapen the construction ofcorset-steel Iastenings, and at the same time simplify them.

My improved eye-piece c is composed ot' wirelike material bent to form a loop with an intermediate.contracted space or throat, as at G, which projects beyond the edge of the steel B, the two ends of the wire loop being suitably connected with the said steel to form a spring, there being lei't between the said contracted space and the edge of the steel auspace of sufcient size (designated by 8) to readily receive the head ot' the stud preparatory to sliding the stud outward in the loop past the contracted throat 6 and into the larger outer end of the elongated slot or space referred to, where the said stud will rest, as in Fig. l, when the steels are in use.

The cap or plate cl, by which the wire loop or eye-piece is connected with the steel, is shown as grooved at its under side, as at 3, to receive the rear ends of the wire loop or eyepiece c, and is attached to the steel B by l rivets 0 c.

be turned downward, so as to enter holes made in the steel B, and the said ends may be riveted at the under side ofthe steel B, as shown in the section, Fig. 3.

I am aware that spring-jaws composed of wire have been used in connection with sheetmetal eye-pieces, as in earlier patents granted to me; but I am not aware that the eye-piece has ever been made of a single piece of wire bent to form a loop with a contracted eye piece, the ends of the wire being connected with the steel.

The ends ofthe wire are bent or shouldered to prevent the loop from being drawn out from under the cap.

I am aware that a loop made from wire with its ends brazed together has been used to form an eye having a contracted space between larger 'openings at the end of theeye, the said eye being joined with webbing and used in connection with Suspenders and stocking-sup porters, and such an eye I do not claim.

I claiml. A corset-steel fastening composed of a wire eye-piece bent to form a closed loop beyond the edge of the steel to which it is attached, the said loop presenting a contracted space for the passage ot` the stud of the opposed steel, the portions of the said wire loop at its most contracted part acting after the passage of the said stud to close behind and hold the stud, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a corset-steel, B, and a cap or plate grooved at its under side, of an eyepiece composed of wire bent to forni a loop with the contracted space or passage for the stud of the opposed steel, the saidloop at or near its ends being interposed between the said stud and cap or plate, vand the latter being'attached to the steel, substantially as described.
