TRUNK-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,947, dated February 24,` 1885.
Application filed September 24, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMEEY ANDREws, of Kennebunk, in the county ot York and State ot' Maine, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Trunk-Hinges, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of trunkhinges, and has for its 'object the production of a hinge which presents no sharp projecting corners or edges to catch and tear clothing; and it consists in certain novel fea` tures ot" construction, which will be readily understood by reference to the description Ot` the drawings, and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
Figure l of the drawings is an elevation ot' a trunk-hinge embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section of same on line x E' on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line y y on Fig. 2, looking toward the joint; and Fig.` 4 is an edge View of the leaf B, looking at the ears, to receive thejoint-pin.
A and B are the two leaves of the hinge, the former being provided with the single ear c, and the latter with the two ears b b, by
means of' which and the pin Or rivet C theI two leaves are pivoted together in the usual manner.
The leaves A and B are made considerably wider than the aggregate width Of the three ears c I) b, and have all ol' their outer corners rounded down to their under surface, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and et, so that there are no sharp corners presented to catch clothing or inter- Tere with the sliding ofthe trunk upon which the hinge is secured along upon another trunk, or upon a carpeted floor when the trunk liappens to lie upon the hinged side.
The thicker portions of the leaves A and B are chambered upon the under side, into which chamber projects the bosses c 0,through which the rivet or screw-holes d d pass, so as to form a solid bearing immediately around the fastening rivet or screw. In the narrower portion of each leaf is formed another rivet or screw hole, f, and intermediate between the holes f and d each leaf is provided-with'two sharp-pointed spursLgLifprned in one piece, o r
integral withvtheleaf, which spurs enter the waliofmthetrunk or cover, Aand serve to registeruthe hinge in the desiredposition before the -rivets ,013,
is subjected, and to that extentm'elieve the strain upon the fastening rivets or screws.
By making the aggregate width Ot' the ears a b b considerably less than the width of those portions ofthe leaves A and B which are contiguous to said ears I am enabled tO have the Outer edges of the ears b b perpendicular to the under surfaces ol" the leaves 'without any possibility ot' clothing getting caught thereon or upon the ends ot' the piv0t-pin C, which are protected by being inclosed between the projecting portions Ot the leaves A and B, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that the leaves A and B are made of the same thickness as the ears a and b b for a considerable distance away from the pivotal connection thereof, and then are reduced in thickness, the outline of said reduction being a curved line, as shown in Fig. l.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire tO secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A hinge composed ot' the leaves A and B, connected together by the ears a b b and pin C, said leaves being made considerably wider than the aggregate width of the ears a b b, and having their outer surfaces curved or rounded down to theirl under surfaces, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A hinge the two leaves of which for a considerable portion of their lengths are made ot' a thickness equal to the thickness of the pivotal ears by which they are connected to gether, and have their outer faces curved or rounded and their inner faces chambered, sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specitication,in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses, on this 19th day of September, A. D. 1884:.
EMERY ANDREWS.
