SILAS A. RICE, OF MAGNOLIA, OHIO.
HANGER FOR SLIDING AND SWINGING GATES.
SPECIFICATION vforming part of Letters Patent No. 226,112, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed February 4, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SILAs A. RICE, ot'Magnolia, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hangers for sliding and swinging gates; and it consists in making the support in which the hinge is held in two pieces, which pieces are provided with a tongue and groove and are bolted together at their outer ends and fastened together by a sort of a look at their inner ends, as will be more fully described'hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the support with the two parts separated and just ready to be put together. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the same.
a represents the hinge or swivel, which has a groove or recess, 0, made in each end, and in the lower part of the upper recess is journaled the frictionroller d. This upper recess receives the lower edge of the board of the gate that is just above it, and the lower recess straddles over the top edge of the board just below it. By thus having the swivel catch over two of the boards of the gate, the swivel prevents any inclination of the gate to tip to one side, the gate is more firmly held, and thereis not such a strain brought to bear on the hinge as there is when the swivel has but a single groove in its top. The support in which this swivel or hinge is held is formed of two pieces, 0 '5, which are secured together at their inner ends by the recess 0 and projection n, and at their outer ends by means of a belt or screw, r. One of these parts is provided with a tongue, 8, and the other with a corresponding groove, 00, so that the two parts support each other their full length. By means of this con struction but a single bolt is necessary to secure the two parts together, and they are as safely held as if made in a single piece.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a rolling gate, the support for the swivel, made in two parts, which parts are secured together by a recess and projection at one end and a belt at the other, one of the parts being provided with a groove and the other with a tongue, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 26th day of January, 1880.
