Description

UNITED STATES FENNER DARLING, OF NORTH BLACKSTONE, MASSACHUSETTS.k
PATENT GEEICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN POCKETS OF WEARlNG-APPAREL.
Specilicatiou forming part of Letters Patent No. 3l,227, dated January 29, 1861,
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, FENNER DAELING, of North Blackstone, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Pockets of Wearing-Apparehof which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip` tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of pants with my improvements attached.
. The object of my present invention is to protect the pockets of pants and other wearingapparel; and it consists in making the mouth or opening ofthe pocket so small. that a pickpocket cannot insert his hand, and yet which may be distended when the wearer wishes to take anything from it, this end being attained by the insertion of an elastic gore on one side of the pocket.
That others skilled in t-he art may understand and use my invention, I will proceed to y describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, A represents the pants; B, the outer side or Hap of the pocket, which, when unbuttoned, discloses the opening a or mouth of the pocket, which is made so small from the point 3 t0 the point 4 that the hand cannot be inserted. A gore, C, of elastic rubber-cloth. is inserted in the waistband b, and extends down, forming part of one side of the pocket f. This gore, by yielding. allows the points 3 and 4 to be forced farther apart to admit the hand of the" Wea-rer. The gore C keeps' the month of the pocket closed s0 small that a pickpocket could not insert his hand without the knowledge of the wearer. At the saine time, from its position in the waistband at each hip, it renders the pants particularly easy and comfortable.
Another advantage I may claim for this `method ot' constructing pants is, that when they are taken off and laid down the contents of the pocket (pocket-book, &c.) are not so liable to drop out.
I have here described one application of my invention-viz., to a pair of pant-S; but it may be applied in the same manner to other articles ot' wearing-apparelsuch as coat, vest, 86o.- the most suitable and convenient form of the gore C readily suggesting itself to a skilful person. W'hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improvement in the construction ofthe pockets of wearing-apparel, is
Inserting the gore C of elastic cloth on one side of the pocket, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
FENNER DA BLING.
