SLEEVE OR COLLAR BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent No. 311,048, dated January 20, 1885.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, JOSEPH WALL, of Greenville. in the county of Washington and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Sleeve and Collar Button, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved sleeve or collar button which can be inserted very easily and rapidly and is held securely in place.

The invention consists in certain improvements in that class of buttons that are provided with a cap having a tubular downwardlyprojecting stem provided with a cross-piece at its lower end, of a stern in the tubular stem, which inner stem is provided at its lower end with a cross-piece and its upper end with a spring-arm that engages with the notched lower edge of the cap, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. A circular cap, A, is provided on its under side with a downwardly-projecting tubular stem, B, provided at its lower end with acrosspiece, H.

Through the tubular stem B a pin or stem, 0, projects upward from a cross-piece, D, and on the upper end of the stem 0 a spring-arm, E, is secured, which projects through a segmental slot, F, in the circular side of the cap, which slot is provided in its bottom edge with a downwardly-extending notch, G,at each end,

the cap.

In the top of the cap A. a cover-piece, J, is held, which may be ornamented in any desired manner.

Before inserting the button the stem 0 is turned, by means of the arm E, so as to bring the cross-piece H over the cross-piece D, and then the two cross-pieces are passed through the button-hole, and then the stem 0 is turned, by means of the arm E, to bring the crosspiece H across the crosspiece D, as shown in Fig. 3, thus holding the button in place and preventing withdrawing it. The cross-piece H is locked in place by passing the end of the arm E into one of the notches G, as shown in Fig. 1. The cross-piece H can also be locked in place when covering the piece D, by passing the end of the arm into the opposite notch.

At or near each end of the slot F a pin, R, projects from the cap, against which pin one finger is rested while using one of the other fingers to raise the outer end of the spring E out of the notch G.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an improved article of manufacture, a button consisting, essentially, of the hollow cap A, provided with a notched slot, F G, in its side, pins R, near the ends of said slot, and the tubular depending stem B, having a crosspiece, H, the stem 0, provided with a cross piece, D, on its lower end, and passing up through stem B into the cap A, the springarni E, connected to stem G and passing through slot F, and a cross-piece, J, secured on the top of the cap, substantially as set forth.
