N0. 173,667 3 Claims. or. 128-548) This invention relates to girdles and particularly to the front structure of garments of this type and kind. More particularly, the invention deals with a girdle having centrally of the front of the girdle a long non-extensible panel, to the lower portion of which are attached a pair of similar overlapped relatively movable extensible members, providing freedom of leg movement at the lower front portion of the girdle. Still more particularly, the inventron deals with members of the character described which, in addition to being attached to said panel, have each end thereof secured to lower front sides of the body portion of the girdle to thereby provide better control of said members and support of the girdle upon the body of the wearer.

The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:

FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic front view of a girdle made according to my invention, with parts of the construction broken away and omitting all showing of trim, stitchings and the like and further illustrating, in part, garter supporting elastics at the front of the garment;

FIG. 2 is a detailed view of one of the extensible member blanks which I employ, preparatory for attachment to other parts of the garment.

Considering FIG. 1 of the drawing, represents what may be termed the body portion of the girdle, consisting of a back 11 and sides 12 which extend well onto the front portion of the girdle and are attached to a front panel 13 which extends from the upper waistband portion 14 downwardl to a position preferably below the wider hip line of the body portion 10 and terminates in downwardly flared lower edges, as at 15 and 16.

The waistband portion 14 includes an elastic portion 17, the forward edges of which are attached to the panel 13, as indicated at 18. The sides 12 of the body portion 10 can be formed of single pieces of material and preferably all-way stretch material is used or a combination of materials can be employed, as is known in the art. It is preferred, however, that the all-way stretch material, when employed, be positioned adjacent and attached to the side edges 19 and 20 of the panel 13, in other words, also extending to the

lower edges

21 and 22 of the body sides 12, these edges extending below the lower ends 15, 16 of the panel 13.

At 23, 23', I have shown two similar extensible members, the member 23 being shown in detached form in FIG. 2 of the drawing. These members may be extensible in a longitudinal direction only, but are preferably made of all-way stretch material, so as to be extensible in any direction and the brief description of the member 23 will be applied to the member 23' by priming of the reference characters applied to the member 23. These members have a long

24, 24 with a shorter upper edge 25, 25', the latter being preferably parallel to the edge 24, 24'. One end of these members has a long edge 26, 26', the other end having a short edge 27, 27'. The last named end portion of these members has an

15, 16 of the non-extensible panel 13. In other words, the edges 25, 28' are stitched to the edge portion 15 of the panel; whereas, 25', 28 are stitched to the edge portion 16. It will also be apparent that the edges 26, 27' are stitched to the edge portion 21 of the body sides 12 of the left body side 12, as viewed in PEG. 1; whereas, the edges 26', 27 are stitched to the edge portion 22 of the right body side 12.

The lower edge portions of both members 23, 23', as well as the lower edges of the body sides 12 and the back 11 of the girdle, are suitably finished and include elastic inner facings, the facing of the back 11 being shown in elevation at 29; whereas, similar facings are diagrammatically illustrated on the sides 12 and on the

members

23, 23 by the dotted lines 29'. Part of the structure of the member 23' is broken away to illustrate this elastic band facing at 29".

It will appear from the above description of the two members 23, 23' that these members have five sides, which are clearly apparent from the showing in FIG. 2 and defined by the

edges

24, 25, 26, 27 and 28. By attachment of the

ends

26, 27 directly to the side body parts 12 of the girdle, it will appear that, in placing the members 23, 23' under tension or flexure, this action is taken up in part by the side body parts which will provide greater flexibility to the lower edge portions of the members 23, 23' and also aid in support of the side body portions upon the body of the wearer. Each of the

members

23, 23 are independently flexible in the relative movement thereof one with respect to the other and, as a result of the structural arrangement defined, the girdle will provide freer leg movement in the use of the girdle and, at the same time, assure a more perfect fit of the garment upon the body of the wearer when the girdle is subjected to the mentioned flexures.

In FIG. 1 of the drawing, I have indicated, in part, at 30 the front garter supporting straps or elastics, which are preferably attached to the front lower corner portions of the body sides 12, it being understood that similar straps or the like are also attached to the back portion of the garment, but these are not shown, as they are well known in this art. 1

It will be apparent, from a consideration of FIG. 1 of the drawing, that the major portion of the

members

23, 23 extends below the lower corners 13' of the panel 13. Thus, these members become freely extensible throughout the area of the members positioned between the

long side edge

26, 26 and the

short side edge

27, 27 and this extensibility becomes amplified, particularly when the said side edges of the

members

23, 23 are attached to body sides 12 of all-way stretch material.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A girdle of the character defined comprising a body portion extending onto the front sides of the girdle, the girdle having an upper waistband portion, a front panel extending from the waistband downwardly throughout the major portion of the depth of the girdle, the lower portion of the front panel having downwardly flared lower edges, side edges of the panel being secured to front sides of the body portion, said front sides of the body portion including relativelylong edges extending below side edges of said front panel, a pair of similar all-way stretch members, each secured to the full length 'of the lower flared edges of the front panel and said last named edges of the body sides, said members being arranged in crossed overlapped relationship to each other, and each of said members having long and short side edges-secured downwardly to said body sides at positions below said front panel to thereby dispose the major portion of said members below said front panel.

2. A girdle as defined in claim 1, wherein each of said members have angularly disposed upper edges conforming to the contour of the lower edges of said front panel, and each of said members including lower edges parallel to one of said angularly disposed upper edges.

3. A girdle as defined in claim 1, wherein the body sides to which said members are attached are composed of all-way stretch material, and said panel is non-extensible.

Claims

1. A GIRDLE OF THE CHARACTER DEFINED COMPRISING A BODY PORTION EXTENDING ONTO THE FRONT SIDES OF THE GIRDLE, THE GIRDLE HAVING AN UPPER WAISTBAND PORTION, A FRONT PANEL EXTENDING FROM THE WAISTBAND DOWNWARDLY THROUGHOUT THE MAJOR PORTION OF THE DEPTH OF THE GIRDLE, THE LOWER PORTION OF THE FRONT PANEL HAVING DOWNWARDLY FLARED LOWER EDGES, SIDE EDGES OF THE PANEL BEING SECURED TO FRONT SIDES OF THE BODY PORTION, SAID FRONT SIDES OF THE BODY PORTION INCLUDING RELATIVELY LONG EDGES EXTENDING BELOW SIDE EDGES OF SAID FRONT PANEL, A PAIR OF SIMILAR ALL-WAY STRETCH MEMBERS, EACH SECURED TO THE FULL LENGTH OF THE LOWER FLARED EDGES OF THE FRONT PANEL AND SAID LAST NAMED EDGES OF THE BODY SIDES, SAID MEMBER BEING ARRANGED IS CROSSED OVERLAPPING RELATIONSHIP TO EACH OTHER, AND EACH OF SAID MEMBERS HAVING LONG AND SHORT SIDE EDGES SECURED DOWNWARDLY TO SAID BODY SIDES AT POSITIONS BELOW SAID FRONT PANEL TO THEREBY DISPOSE THE MAJOR PORTION OF SAID MEMBERS BELOW SAID FRONT PANEL.
