1 This invention relates to garments employing pockets, with means supporting the pockets upon the body of a wearer. More particularly, the invention deals with garments of this kind wherein the pockets have relatively movable lower end portions with strap members engaging said end portions for supporting said pockets firmly beneath the breasts of the wearer and in raised youthful position when the garment is in use. Still more particularly, the invention comprises the use of relatively wide elastic or Lastex pad or band portions joining at least one of the relatively movable parts of the pocket in establishing a firm support of the inner adjacent side portions of the breasts arranged in the pockets, and

still more particularly, the invention deals with garments of the class described wherein wide pad or band portions are employed of elastic or Lastex material on outer side portions of the pockets for a similar purpose. The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed, and in which the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in Which:

Fig, 1 is a front perspective view of a garment made according to my invention.

Fig, 2 is an inside view of the brassiere, as seen in Fi 1, showing only the central front portion thereof; and

Fig. 3 is a perspective front view of the lower portion of one pocket, showing the parts in separate position in diagrammatically illustrating the arrangement of said parts.

The present invention constitutes a continuation in part of the structure disclosed in my prior application Serial Number 556,604, filed September 30, 1944, which has matured into Patent 2,374,093, issued April 17, 1945.

In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing is shown front and rear views of at least the front portion of the garment or brassiere. In these figures, I and Illa represent two substantially similar pockets joined centrally of the garment, as indicated at l l. Attached to outer side portions of the pockets are side and back bands l2 and. i3 detachably coupled, as seen at M in any desired manner, as is customary in garments of this type and kind. One of the bands, for example, the band I3 may include an elastic insert l5 to provide yieldable mounting of the garment upon the body of the wearer. At the upper central portion of each pocket is secured a strap or loop l6 and I! with which is adjustable coupled shoulder straps l8 and it through the medium of buckles and 2|, the straps l8 and l 9 being attached to the bands l2 and I 3 at the rear portions thereof, as indicated at 22 and 23.

Each pocket at the lower central portion thereof has a

dart

24 and 25 to give bust conforming contour to the pockets, and lower portions of the pockets below the darts have free relatively movable ends, the

ends

26 and 21 being continuous with inner portions of the pockets and overlying outer side portions thereof, whereas the

ends

28 and 23 terminate substantially in alinement with the

darts

24 and 25. The ends 26 and 2! join the outer side edge portions of the pockets Ill and Illa in elastic straps 30 and 3|. Attached to the

ends

28 and 29 are elastic or Lastex straps or

bands

32 and 33 with which are coupled

34 and 35, which extend to and are coupled with the upper central portions of the pockets I0 and Illa where the straps l6 and I! are coupled therewith, the strap 34 extending to the upper end of the pocket Ida, and the strap 35 extending to the upper end of the pocket I0.

Inner side portions of the pockets ill and Illa have buttonhole or

other openings

36 and 31, through which the

34 and 35 pass, and the ends of the

34 and 35 join the upper portions of the brassires in

elastic straps

38 and 39 respectively, although the latter straps are not absolutely essential if the pads or

32 and 33 are composed of elastic material.

In the present construction, the straps or

bands

32 and 33 might also be termed wide pad portions, by reason of the fact that they spread over a material area of the lower portion of the pocket and are wider at the lower center of the pocket than at the side portions thereof and these pads which are preferably composed of Lastex material provide reinforcing members to aid in the support of the breasts in raised youthful position. With the present construction, I also employ supplemental band or pad portions 40 and 4|, also preferably of the same materials as employed in the pads or

bands

32 and 33. The pads or bands 48 and 4| extend from the

edge portions

28 and 29 to the outer edges of the pockets or to the side and back bands I2 and I 3. These pads or bands are preferably wider at the central lower portions of the pockets than at the outer edges thereof to provide reinforcing members, aiding in the firm support of lower and outer side portions of the breasts Within the pockets. Bearing in mind that the

straps

34 and 35 include elastic ends, it is not absolutely essential that the mem- I bers 32 and 33, and 40 and All have elastic properties to any great degree. Furthermore, elasticity may be provided longitudinally as well as transversely on these members in adapting them to fit upon the breasts of a wearer.

When elastic properties are employed in the bands or pads 40 and 4|, which may also be termed straps, these will operate to control to a degree the pull of the

34 and 35 upon the

free edge portions

28 and 29, acting in a sense as a balance, and also transmitting the pull of the straps to the outer edge portions of the pockets or to the side bands, as will be apparent.

It is also preferred that the length of the mem;

bers

32 and 33 be such as to be contained within the pockets so that when the garment is inuse;

the

34 and 35 alone will extend outwardly;

thickness of the pad portions, the shape or out- 30 ward tapering ofrthe pad portions will adapt them to fit properly upon the lower and lower :inner and outer sides of the breasts in supporting the breasts in raised and youthful position.

Having fully described my invention, what I :claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat- .ent is:

1. A garment of the class described comprising breast pockets, means for supporting the pockets on the body of the wearer, each pocket comprising lower relatively movable inner and outer sides having overlapping portions centrally of the pockets and at free edges thereof, the inner sides having wide extending portions overlying lower portions of the outer sides, elastic straps joining side extensions with outer side portions of the pockets, means extending from the outer sides of the pockets to upper central portions of opposed pockets. for supporting said outer sides firmly upon the breasts'of a wearer, said last named means comprising wide pad portions of lastex material arranged adjacent lower portions of the inner sides of the pockets, and other pad portions extending from free inner edges of the outer sides of the pockets to outer side edges of the pockets and arranged upon inner surfaces of the outer side portions of said pockets. 7 i V V 2. A garment of the class described comprising breast pockets, means for supporting the pockets on the body of the wearer, each pocket compris- 60 ing lower relatively movable inner and outer sides having overlapping portions centrally of the pockets and at free edges thereof, the inner sides having wide extending portions overlying lower portions of the outer sides, elastic straps joining side extensions with outer side portions of the pockets, means extending from the outer sides of the pockets to upper central portions of opposed pockets for supporting said outer sides firmly upon the breasts of a wearer, and pad portions extending from the free inner edge of the outer sides of the pockets and arranged upon inner "surfaces of the outer side portions of said pockets.

3. A brassireof the class described compris ing a pair of similar breast pockets, means join- -ing adjacent edge portions of the pockets, means attachedto outer side edges and upper portions Q of the pockets for adjustably supporting the same upon the body of the wearer, each pocket having centrally of the lower portion thereof relatively movable parts with free edges, straps coupled with said free edges, said parts being continuous with inner and outer side portions of each pocket, the strap of the inner part extending to and being secured to the outer side edge of the pocket, the strap of the outer part extending to and being secured to the upper central portion of an opposed pocket, said last named strap including a pad portion arranged upon the inner part of the pocket, and another pad'extending from the free edge of the outer side part of each pocket to the outer edge of the pocket and arranged upon the inner surface of said side part.

4. In garments of the class describedhaving breast pockets with means for supporting the pockets upon the body of a wearer, each pocket having relatively movable inner and outer lower side free edges, each pocket having pad portions, attached to the free edges of the outer sidesof 40 the pockets and arranged. upon inner surfaces of both inner and outer sides of the pockets, inner pad portions having straps attached thereto crossing centrally of the garment and extendin to upper central portions of opposed pockets, ends of the other pad portions being attached to outer edges of the pockets, and other strap members extending from the free edges of the inner sides of the pockets to the outer edges of said pockets.
