JAMES E. LADD, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
TRUNK HINGE AND STAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,288, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed July 14, 1884. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMEs E. LADD, ofBristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk Hinges and Stays, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the rear side of a trunk with my improved hinge and stay applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of a trunk-anda side elevation of my trunk hinge and stay, the trunk being represented as opened. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of one end of a trunk and one of my hinges, with a differ ent kind of stay. Fig. 4 is a transverse section ofsaid trunk, together with a side elevation of said hinge and stay, said parts being illustrated with the trunk closed; and Fig. 5 is a like view of the same with the trunk open.
I prefer to employ a stay composed of two sliding straps, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the same forming the subject of the Letters Pat out granted to me January 1, 1884, No. 291,203; but my hinge may be employed in connection with a stay composed of folding straps, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, the same forming the subject of another application filed by me Xovember 2S, 1883, berial No. 113,001.
The hinge A A may be made with any ordinary form ofjoint, (1. Its leaves,\vhich are in the form ofa strap-hinge,are placed at the rear of the trunk upon the outside, as shown. The edge of the hinge which is nearest the stay is made straight and provided with l ugs I) 7), which project laterally from said edge, as shown. By the side of this hingel. place the stay B, Figs. 1 and 2, or the stay B, Figs. 3, 4-, and 5, or other equivalent strap-stay having notches 0, Figs. 1 and 3, in the edge which confronts the hinge, and in such position as to coincide and be engaged by the lugs 72 I) when the trunk is closed. The stay B consists of two straps, d d, secured together so as to slide one upon the other to a given extent, while their upper and lower ends are hinged, respectively, to the trunk-cover C and body D.
' stay which spans the notchesc c.
I have illustrated my stays as being perforated for the engagement of dowel or steady pinsf when the trunk is closed; but said dowelpins and engaging holes or sockets may be omitted, if desired.
In practice I prefer to place a hinge upon each side edge of the stay, as shown at the right-hand end of Fig. 1, so as to firmly support both edges of the stay. If'desired, like straps or leaves with lugs on their edge, but without the hinge-joi11t,may be substituted for the second hinge upon one side of the stay. XVhen the trunk is closed, the stay lies close to the rear side of the trunk and by the edge of the hinge, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4, and when the trunk is open the stays move outwardly from theback of the trunk away from the hinge, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. The stay B consists of folding straps g and h,hinged together and to the trunk cover and body, as shown. with either stay, when the trunk is closed, the lugs I) Z) engage the notches c c in the stay, and thereby effectually remove all strain from the hinge-joints, either of the hinge proper or the hinges by which the stay is secured to the truuk, all of the strain coming upon the hingeleaves and that portion of the The hinge, lying by the side of the stay and with its edge abutting the edge of the stay, as shown, forms a protection for the stay, to prevent the cover from working upon the body of the trunk, and also to protect the edge ot'the stay from injury by contact with other objects.
- I claim as my invention- The combination of the strap-hinge having lugs b 7) upon one edge, and the trunk-stay having corresponding notches in its adjoining edge, the same being adapted to be applied to a trunk cover and body, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
JAMES E. LADD.
