BENCH HOOK.
No. 309,998. Patented-Deo. 30, 1884.
Ihvrrn STATES CHARLES M. VAN VLECK, OF UHRIOI-ISVILLE, OHIO.
BENCH-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,998, dated December 30,1884;
Application filed October 23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. VAN VLECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uhrichsvillc, in the county of Tuscarawas and Stato of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bench Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art' to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bench-hooks, the 0bject of the same being to provide a carpenters bench with an adjustable bar or hook, the means for adjusting said bar or hook being attached under the bench and to one side of the saine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanyingdrawings, which illustrate in v invention, Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a side view.
A represents a carpenters bench, the upper portion of which is recessed for the reception of a plate, B, which is provided with a rectangular' passage-way, C, for the reception of the bench-hook. 'The side pieces, C', of this passage-way project so as to form bearings for a horizontal shaft, D, which is provided between said side pieces with avgear-wheel, E. The side c of the passageway C is cut away so as to allow the gear-wheel E to pass through the same and engage with the rack-teeth c, formed on the lower portion of the benchhook. The upper portion ofthe bench-hook is provided with sei-rations, c, with which the board or other object will, engage, and the wall c is provided at its upper portion with a recess, f, upon which the lower serration will rest when the hook is withdrawn entirely within the casing.
G represents a metallic shell, which is provided with a projecting iiange, g, which is secured within a recess in the depending side A of the bench. rIhis plate is provided with a perforation, through which the shaft vD passes, and said shaft is provided on the outer side of said plate with a ratchet-wheel, h, and a serrated disk, H, for turning said shaft. Pivoted to the plate G is a pawl, I, having a thumb-piece, i, for raising said pawl, the pawl being held in engagement with the ratchetwheel by a spring, j.
The operation of my invention is as follows: To raise the hook the disk H is turned, causing the gear-wheel E to rotate, which engages with the teeth on the bench-hook, and said bench-hook is held in a raised position by the ratchet-wheel, the pawl of which prevents the rotation ofthe shaft. To lower the bench-hook, the pawl I is raised and the shaft turned in an opposite direction, the flange f abutting against the lower one of the teeth e, thus preventing the hook being depressed below the surface of the bench.
I am aware thatprior to my invent-ion benchhooks have been constructed which are provided with rack-teeth, with which engage a worm-wheel which is connected to a shaft having a handle which operates horizontally, the same being let into a recess in the surface of the bench. rIhis construction is objectionable, owing to the fact that the recess in the upper surface ofthe bench is liable to become filled with refuse matter, which has t'o be removed before the handle can be turned.
I claiml. In a bench-hook, the casing C, depending from the upper surface of the bench and provided with side flaiiges, in combination with the shaft D, having a gear-wheel which eugages with teeth formed on the bench-hook, said shaft D being provided at its outer end with a ratchetwheel and milled disk, the former engaging with a spring-pawl, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the bench hook having teeth formed on its lower end, a horizontally-supported shaft having a gear-wheel which engages with said teeth, said shaft being provided at its outer end with a ratchetwheel and milled disk, said ratchet-wheel engaging with a spring-pawl, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a bench-hook, the plate B, having dcpending therefrom a casing consisting of sides C G" c c, a horizontal shaft journaled therein andV provided with a gear-wheel, which engages with rack-teeth formed on the benchhook, the end ofsaid shaft beingjournaled in a iianged plate, G, and provided with a ratchet- Wheel, h, and spring-pawl I, with u proj eating portion, i, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a beneh-hook, the easing C, provided 5 near its upper portion with a reeess,f,whieh forms a stop against which the lower one of the teeth e abuts, in combination with the sha-ft D, having :i geur-wheel which engages with the teeth formed on the bench-hook,
1o said shaft being provied at its outer end with a. ratchet-wheel und disk, said ratchet-wheel engaging with a spring-pawl, .substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I zLi-'x my signatu re in presence of two Withesses.
CHARLES M. 'VAN VLECK.
