ALBERT T. BOOTH, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
REPEATING CALL-BELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,368, dated January '6, 1885.
Application filed May 17, 1883.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT T. Boo'rir, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Repeating Gall-Bells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts. t
Figure l is a side view of my device with parts cut away or in section to show construction. 2 is a top view ofthe device with the shell removed. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the device with parts in the position at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1.
My invention relates to the class of callbells in which the impulse is given to the tongue and hammer by means of the rotation of aratchet-wheel, and it has for its object the construction of a bell of this particular class in amuch simpler and cheaper form than has hitherto been made.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes a standard or base of any form or design, I), a cap or cover fast to the base; 0, a plate fast to the cover bearing the hollow stem d, a part of which extends below the plate and part above. W'ithin the stem is arranged the push-pintle 0, having the pin f, which projects laterally through the slot 9 in the upper part of the stem. The ratchet h fits loosely about the stem above the plate, and is provided with upward-projecting spiral cams t, which are of a height to allow them to pass clear of the pin f in turning about the stem. The ratchet is in contact with a swinging pawl, j, pivoted to the plate, and bearing the tongue is, provided with the hammer Z. \Vithin the lower part of the stem a spiral spring, is arranged, one end of which is fast to the stem, and the other fast to the push-pintle in such manner as not only to press upward against the pintle, but to also give it a tor sional twist. To the upper part of the stem is secured a sounding-shell, a, of ordinary form and material, and thepush-pintle is pro vided with the thumb-piece e.
(Model) Ward, and the upward pressure of the Spring m causes the pin to follow up the incline back of the cam until the top of it is reached, when by the torsional force of the spring the pin is thrown to one side, to the position shown in Fig. 3, so that when the pintle is again depressed the pin will operate upon the face of the cam, causing the ratchet to turn forward.
My invention consists in the use of the spring, whereby the pintle is given a rectilinear and a rotary motion,of the double-faced cams, and of the special combination of parts which enables me to effect the desired result with the minimum of material and labor as compared with the prior art.
I am aware that a rotary ratchet bearing a cam-sleeve and operated by means of a projecting pin on a movable pintle is not new in call-bells, and such I do not broadly claim.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a repeating call-bell,the combination of the base a, stem d, rotary ratchet h, bearing the double-faced cams t, push-pintle 6, having a rectilinear and a rotary motion, bearing pin 1'', and the bell and striking mechanism, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. 1
2. In a repeating call-bell, in combination, a base, a, bearing a fixed hollow stem, (1, a spiral spring, at, arranged within the stem and rigidly attached to both the stem and the pnslrpintle, the push-pintle (2, having both a rectilinear and rotary mot-ion and bearing a pin, f, the rotary ratchet IL, bearing the double-faccd cams i, and the bell and striking mechanism, all substantially as described.
ALBERT T. BOOTH.
