MUSIC-BOX.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,774, dated May 24, 1887.
I Application filed April 15, 1986. Serial No. 198,932. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED SUEUR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 5 in Music-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in music-boxes in which the pin eylinder is revolved by means of a spring; and the object of my invention is to produce a'musiebox in which the pin-cylinder is revolved fora long time without'requin ing rewinding of the spring.
The invention consists in a base-plate pror vided on its under side with a large spring, from which spring the motion is transmitted to the pin-cylinder.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the under side of the base-plate of my i mproved music-box, showing the bridge and transmitting-wheels. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view of the box. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of the base-plate, the spring and other parts being removed. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same on linear m,
Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indie-ate corresponding parts,
The barrel A is formed on the under side of the base-plate B, that is east or otherwise made integral with the same; but it may be fastened by suitable devices. Two pillars, G 0, also project from the under side of the baseplate B, the free ends of the pillars being a short distance beyond the edge of the barrel, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. A large spiral spring is placed in the barrel, and is fastened to the side of the same and to the spring-shaft D, said shaft D being journaled in the base- 40 plate and in the bridge E, secured to the pillars O.
A pinion, F, driven from the mainspringpillars and the side of the barrel.
shaft gears with the pinion or cog-wheel G, mounted on a shaft, H, journaled in the baseplate and on the bridge between one of the Said shaft H carries a bevel cog-wheel, J, engaging with a bevel cog-wheel, K, on the pin-cylinder L. The pin-cylindcr is thus revolved from the spindle of themainspring.
As a large tnainspring can be used, the cylinder runs a long time without requiring the rewinding of the spring.
I am aware that music-boxes have been made in which a spring-barrel is made integral with the base-plate, and I am also aware that musicboxes have been made in which aspring in an ordinary barrel has been arranged below the base-plate, and this I do not claim, broadly.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A music-box having a spring-barrel on the under side of the base-plate, combined with a spring in said barrel, said spring uncoiling and in a plane parallel with that of the face- 6 plate, and the spindle of said spring being at right angles to the base plate, substantially as shown and described.
2. A music-box having a spring-barrel and two pillars on the under side of the base-plate, 0 said barrel and pillars being made integral with the plate, combined with a spring in said barrel, the spring uncoiling in a plane parallel with that of the face-plate, and the spindle of said spring being at right angles to the baseplate, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED SUEUR.
