Description

(No Model.)
W. HANSON.
GEAR MECHANISM.
No. 367,909. Patented Aug. 9, 1887.
IIlIIi liiiiillllll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HANSON, OF OALISTOGA, CALIFORNIA.
GEAR MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No, 367,909, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed January 21, 1887. Serial No. 225.045. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HANSON, of Calistoga, Napa county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Gear Mechanism; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a new and useful power device or mechanism; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of my power mechan ism. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail section of one of the boxes of the counter-shaft D.
A is a shaft, to which any given initial power may be applied and in any suitable manner. I have here shown a pulley, B, by which this power may be given, though I could use a water-Wheel or other motor. Upon the shaft A is fixed a gear, 0.
D is a counter-shaft, mounted in boxes (I, and carrying a gear, E, which meshes with gear 0. Upon shaft D is fixed a fly-wheel, F, by which momentum is obtained.
G is a small pinion on shaft D, and H is a large gear meshing with the pinion, and from which the power is to be distributed.
loose enough to permit a slight vertical play of said shaft, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, whereby the weight is thrown on the cogs of the large gear.
. Any suitable proportion of the various parts may be maintained for the purpose of increas ing or converting the power, and these proportions will depend upon and will vary with the result desired.
The counter-shaft D is mounted in boxes This power can be applied to any machine or apparatus where such an increase or conversion is needed. It will be found useful in hay-prgsses, hoisting-works,-&c.
Having/thus described my invention, what I, claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V An improved gear mechanism consisting of the shaft A, to which the initial power is applied, the gearO on the shaft, the boxes (I, the loosely-mounted counter-shaft D, the gear E, fly-wheel F, and pinion G on said countershaft, and the large gear H, all combined and adapted to operate substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto hand.
set my WILLIAM HANSON. r
