Be it known that we, JOHN STRAKA, a citizen of Austria, and RUDOLPH LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DoorBells, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in door bells.
The object of our invention is to provide a door bell which may be operated by the turning of the knob of an ordinary door knob.
Our invention further provides a construction in which the bell operating mechanism is rendered inoperative when it is desired to operate the knob without operating the bell.
Other novel features of our invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrative of the preferred form of our invention, Figure 1 is a plan view, the gong being shown in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the dotted line ab of Fig. 1, the lower portion of the base plate, and the knobs being removed. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, with the back plate and outer knob removed. Fig. 4 is a rear end view of the locking knob.

1 denotes a base plate of any desired form and size and having in its rear side a recess 2, a recess 3 being provided in its forward side near its upper end. The plate 1 is provided with a horizontal forwardly extending post 4 to which is secured an ordinary bell gong 5 which is adapted to be struck by two clappers 6 and 7 respectively pivoted on horizontal forwardly extending studs 8 and 9 located in the recess 3 and secured to the base plate 1.
A coil spring 10 is mounted on the post 4: and is provided with two arms 11 which engage and respectively force the clappers 6 and 7 toward the gong 5. Horizontal pins 12 secured to the base plate 1 normally limit the movement of the clappers 6 and 7. The clappers are resilient so that when forcibly moved by the arms 11 of the spring 10, they will yield sufficiently to strike the gong 5 when they strike the pins 12. To force the clappers 6 and 7 away from the gong 5 against the pressure of the spring 10, a reciprocative member comprising preferably a Specification of Letters Patent.

vertical bar 13 is slidably mounted on the base plate 1 1n the recess 2. Said member is also mounted in a vertical groove 14 which connects the recesses 2 and 3. At the upper end of the groove 14 the plate 1 is provided with a hole 15 connecting with the recess 3, and through which the reciprocative member 13 may be passed when the parts are assembled. The upper end of the bar or member 13 is provided with a vertical slot 16 through which extends the post 41. In the slot 16 is mounted a coil spring 17 one end of which bears against the post 4 and the other end of which bears against the member 13 at the top of the slot 16. The spring 17 normally moves the member 13 to the upper position shown in Fig. l. Opposite edges of the member 13 are provided respectively with two rows of teeth 18 and 19 adapted to respectively engage projections 20 and 21 on the lower ends of the clappers 6 and 7 when the member 13 is reciprocated, thereby moving said clappers against the pressure of the spring 10.
22 denotes an ordinary knob spindle to which are secured the usual door knobs, one of which is shown and denoted by 23.
The lower end of the member 13 is provided with two spherically shaped slots in which are pivoted respectively the cylindrically formed upper ends of two laterally movable members 24: and 25 the lower ends of which are provided with horizontal extensions 26 upon the upper sides of which are adapted to respectively rest two diametrically opposite lugs or cams 27 provided on a cam collar 28 secured upon and rotatable with the spindle 22. Two springs 29 are socured at one set of ends to the base plate 1 and have their other ends respectively hearing against the outer edges of the members 24 and 25 and normally force said members into engagement with the cams 27.
When the knob 23 is turned in either direction the spindle 22 .will likewise be turned and one or the other of the cams 27 will engage the adjacent extension 26 and force the member to which such extension belongs downwardly, thus moving downwardly the reciprocative member 13. The teeth 18 and 19 are preferably disposed in staggered relation to each other, so that as the member 13 moves downwardly or upwardly the teeth 18 and 19 will alternately cause the swinging of the clappers 6 and 7 against the pressure of the spring. As soon as a tooth passes the adjacent projection on the clapper engaged by it, the spring 10 will forc bly swing the said clapper against the ad acent in 12. The clapper thus moved will be flexed by its momentum sufficiently to cause it to strike the gong 5. After the member 13 has been drawn downwardly its full stroke and the knob 23 is released the spring 16 will retract the member 13 to its initial position. During the retractive movement of the member 13 the teeth 18 and 19 will operate the clappers 6 and 7 in the manner already described.
When it is desired to operate the knob 23 without operating the member 13 this may be done through the mechanism whlch will now be described.
3O denotes a horizontal pin rotatively mounted in a hole provided in the plate 1 intermediate of the members 2 1 and 25. The pin 30 is longitudinally slidable and has secured to its outer end a knob 31 provided at its inner end with one or more radial projections 32 adapted to enter corresponding grooves 33 provided in the outer S1d8 of the base plate 1. The inner end of the pin 1s provided with an oblong head 34E, whlch when the pin is in the position shown in Fig. 3 is out of engagement with the members 24 and 25, but when the pin 30 is drawn outwardly so as to release the pro ections from the grooves 33 and the knob 31 1s r0 tated to a position at right angles to the position shown in the drawings,the head 3a will strike the inner edges of the members 24 and 25 and force said members apart at their lower ends and out of engagement with the cams 27. The knob 31 is then released upon which a coil spring 35, which encircles the pin 30 and bears at one end against the rear side of the plate 1 and at its other end against the head 34, will rearwardly retract the pin 30 until the projec tions 32 enter the grooves 33. The pin 30 will thus be locked from rotation, and the members 24: and 25 will be held from engagement with th earns 27, so that the spindle 22 may be freely turned without operating the bell.
Secured to the back of the base plate 1 and covering the recess 2 may be provided a plate 36, as shown in Fig. 2. The plate 1 may be provided with a key hole 37 for the reception of a key for operating the look, not shown.
We do not limit our invention to the structure shown and described as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a door bell, two clappers, a reciprocative member having two rows of teeth,
the teeth of one row being in staggered relation to the teeth of the other row, the teeth of said rows respectively engaging and moving said clappers when the reciprocative member is moved in one direction, means for reversely moving said clappers, a door knob, means connecting the door knob and the reciprocative member by which said member is moved in one direction when the knob is turned, and means for moving the reciprocative member in the opposite direction.
2. In a door bell, two clappers, a spring for forcing the clappers in one direction, a reciprocative member having two rows of teeth respectively engaging said clappers for moving the clappers against the pressure of the spring when the reciprocative member is moved in one direction, a door knob, means connecting the door knob and said reciprocative member for moving said member in one direction when the knob is turned, and means for moving the said member in the opposite direction.
3. In a door bell, two clappers, a spring for forcing the clappers in one. direction, a reciprocative member having two rows of teeth respectively engaging said clappers for moving the clappers against the pressure of the sprlng when the reciprocative member is moved in one direction, a door knob,
means connecting the door knob and reciprocative member by which when the knob is turned the reciprocative member is moved in one direction, means for moving the said member in the opposite direction, and adjustable means for rendering said connecting means inoperative for moving the reciprocative member when the knob is turned.
1. In a door bell, two clappers, a spring for forcing the clappers in one direction, a reciprocative member having two rows of teeth, the teeth of one row being disposed in staggered relation to the teeth of the other row, said rows of teeth respectively engaging said clappers for moving them against the pressure of the spring when the reciprocative member is moved in one direction, and means for reciprocating said member.
5. In a door bell, a clapper, a spring for moving the clapper in one direction, a reciprocative member having means for engaging and moving the clapper against the pressure of the spring, a knob spindle, a cam carried by the spindle, a laterally movable member pivoted to the reciprocative member and movable into a position engaging the cam, whereby when the spindle is turned the cam will move the reciprocative member through the intermediacy of the laterally movable member, means for moving the laterally movable member to said position, and adjustable means for moving the laterally movable member out of engagement with said cam.
6. In a door bell, a clapper, a spring for moving the clapper in one direction, a reciprocative member having means for engaging and moving the clapper against the pressure of said spring, a knob spindle, a laterally movable member pivoted to the reciproca tive member for moving the reciprocative member, means carried by the spindle for engaging and moving the laterally movable member so as to move the reciprocative member, means for normally forcing the laterally movable member into engagement with the spindle carried means, and adjustable means for disengaging the laterally movable member from said spindle carried means.
7. In a door bell, a clapper, a reciprocative member having means for moving said elapper when the member is moved in one direc tion, a knob spindle, two laterally movable members connected to the reciprocative member for moving said member, means carried by the spindle for engaging and moving said laterally movable members in a direction such that they w ll move said reciprocative member, means for normally forcing said laterally movable members into engagement with the spindle carried means, and adjustable means for disengaging the laterally movable members from said spindle carried means.
8. In a door bell, a clapper, a reciprocative member having means for moving the clapper when the member is moved in one direction, a knob spindle, two laterally movable members connected to and adapted to move said member, a cam member carried by the spindle and having means when the spindle is turnedsin opposite directions to alternately engage said laterally movable members so as to move the reciprocative member through the intermediacy of the laterally movable members, means for normally "forcing the laterally movable members into engagement with said cam member, and adjustable means for disengaging said laterally movable members from said cam member.
9. In a door bell, a clapper, a reciprocative member having means for moving the clapper when the member is moved in one direction, a knob spindle, two laterally movable members connected to the reciprocative member for moving said member, means carried by the spindle for alternately engaging and moving said laterally movable members when the spindle is rotated in opposite directions, means for normally moving the laterally movable members to engagement with said spindle carried means, and means for disengaging and retaining the laterally movable members disengaged from the spindle carried means.
10. In a door bell, a clapper, a reciprocative member having means for moving the clapper when the member is moved in one direction, a knob spindle, a laterally movable member for moving the reciprocative member, means carried by the spindle for engaging and operating the laterally movable member to move the reciprocating member, and a rotary member adjustable to different positions and provided with means for engaging the laterally movable member to move said laterally movable member out of engagement with the spindle carried means when the rotary member is moved to one position.
