GEORGE J. MURDOOK, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
FILE AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,153, dated December 9, 1884.
Application filed July 16, 1884.
.To aZZ whom, it rim/y concern.-
Be it known that'I, GEORGE J. MURDooK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files and Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved file and holder. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a view of the under side of the same. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line m, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view of the file. Fig. 6 is a crosssection on the line :10 m, Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is a view of the thumb-nut and screw.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to holders for files; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the holder, which may be secured in a handle, I and may have upon one edge a graduated rule, 0, and the outer end of this holder, which is a straight flat bar, is provided with a lug or shortrib, I), having beveled sides and projecting from the under side of the holder, while the inner end of the holder has a longitudinal slot, E.
F is the file-blade, which has two slots or notches, G and H, one at each end, the sides of which slots are beveled to both sides, adapting the one to fit upon the beveled rib at the end of the holder and the other to be held by the beveled head I of a screw, J, which passes through and slides in the slot in the inner end of the holder, and is provided with a thumbnut, K. It will be seen that, the side edges of (N0 model the slots being beveled to both sides of the file-blade, the said blade may be turned so as to expose either side; and it will be seen that the blade may be secured in the holder by slipping the notch at one end upon the beveled rib at the end of the holder, whereupon the head of the screw may be slipped into the other slot, sliding in the slot in the holder, and be secured by means of the thumb-nut.
Havingthus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination of a holder provided with a lug at its outer end, the said lug increasing in diameter toward its outer end, a file-blade having a notch or slot at its end corresponding in shape to the lug and fitting upon the same, and means, substantially as described, for securing the inner end of the file, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of a holder provided at its outer end with a lug increasing in diameter toward its outer end, and having a longitudinal slot at its inner end, a file-blade having slots or notches at its ends increasing in diameter toward both sides, and a screw having a head increasing in diameter toward its outer end, and provided with a thumb-nut, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. The combination of a holder having a graduated rule at one edge, and. having a lug or short rib at its outer end, having beveled sides and a longitudinal slot at its inner end, a file-blade having a slot or notch at each end, having the side edges beveled toward both sides, and a screw having a beveled head and provided with a thumbnut, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE J. MURDOOK.
