To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN S. CANTELO, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawingdnives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, which form a part of this specification, and in Which 4 l Figure l is `a View vshowing my improved drawing knife Withfthehandles folded down upon the cutting-edge, so as to protect the latter. My invention contemplates certain improve` ments in so-called drawing-knives77 or shav-A ing-knives, which are used by coopers, Wa-G goirinakers, andcarpenters (usually in connection with a shaving-horse7) for holding staves, spokes, shingles, aX-handles, or other articles to be shaved.

My said improvementsconsist in the construction and arrangement of folding and adjustable handles, which, when the knife is not in use, 'may be folded down upon the cuttingedge, so as to protect the latter, and may also be adjusted at different angles tothe knifeblade, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the knife-blade, which maybe of any suitable length and Width,and has a sharp (and preferably slightly rounded) cutting. edge, a. The bodyof `the knife-blade has at each end a disk, B, having a series of circumferential notches, b, and a central hole, c, through which a screw or pin, C, is inserted, on which the handles D are pivoted. The latter are slotted longitudinally, as shown at d, and are bentto form disk-shaped ears D', between Whichthe notched end disks, B, of the knife are inserted.

, E E are spring-catches, of any suitable construction, which are inserted into the upper recessed parts of the handles D. Each of these catches or latches is provided with aprojecting thumb-`piece, c, and a lug, f, adapted to fit into any one of the notches I) of its appropriate disk B.

connection with the drawings, the advantages of my improvement will readily be understood. By pressing upon the thumb-pieces c the catches E are released, so `that the pivoted handles may be folded down upon and over the edge a, as shown in Figs. l and 3, so as to cover and protect the lattewhen the knife is not in use. Again, when the knife is to be used the handles may be adjusted in different positions or atdifferent angles to theknifeblade, as shown in Fig. 2, in which the fullline drawings show the position of the handles for ordinary use in shaving hoops or shingles, when extended, as shown in the dotted lines indicated by D3. This position of the handles Will protect the hands of the operator and prevent them from coming in contact with the Work-bench or shaving-horse, and the posiL tion indicated by the dotted lines marked D'l represents the adjustment of the handles when l itis desired to push the knife instead of drawing or pulling it, or when it is desired to grind the knife-edge.

I am aware that a drawing-knife has been provided with handles which are adjustably held to the shave or knife by a set-screw; and also that a knife has been pro vided with hinged handles which are held open or closed by a spring, and also that handles have been made so as to receive the edge of the knife for protecting it.
