Description
0. N. MILLER.
LAMP CHIMNEY.
Patented Oct. 28, 1884.
UNITED STATES CHARLES NICHOLAS MILLER, OF SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO FITCFO AMANDA MILLER, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP-CHIMNEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 307,406, dated October 28 1884.
Application filed March 6, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLEs N. IVIILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Rafael, in the county of Marin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimneys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my lampchimney attachment, showing it in position upon a chimney. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the chimney and its attachment, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lower part of the attachment removed from the chimney.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre' sponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation totha-t class of attachments for lamp-chimneys which consist of a flue or extension of sheet metal adapted to be fitted upon the top of the glass chimney, for the purpose of producing a better light by providing for complete combustion by an increased supply of oxygen to the flame; and it consists in the improved construction of an attachment of that class, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the chimney, which may be of any desired style and size, so that it has a flaring top flange, B. O is a sheet-metal tube of any suitable length, fastened to the lower end of which is a flaring collar, D, the upper flaring edge of which is turned down to form a flat annular rim or flange, E. Inserted through the lower part of the sheet-metal tube is a piece of springwire, F, the outer ends of which are bent to form hooks G, adapted to grasp the flaring top of the glass chimney, as will be seen more clearly by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings,
so as to hold the attachment firmly in its po 5 sition upon the top of the chimney.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the manner of using this attachment will be readily understood without requiring further explanation.
By making it in differentsizes it may be adapted for use upon all the different sizes and styles of glass chimneys in the market; and as it is attached to the extreme top of the chimney it will in no wise obscure the flame; 5 5
but on the contrary, by increasing the draft, and thereby providing for perfect combustion in the flame, it will greatly enhance the bril-- liancy of the light and prevent smoking, even if an inferior quality of oil is used, which could and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 7 The combination of the glass chimney A, having flange 13, sheet-metal cylinder 0, having flaring collar D, provided with the annular rim E, and spring-wire F, bent at opposite 7o ends to form hooks G, adapted to clasp the outwardly-flaring flange of the glass chimney, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES NICHOLAS MILLER.
