TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, J. J. MARCY, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven, and, State of Connecticut,

have invented a.;new Improvement in Lamp Burners;. and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in Figure 1, a side view. l i Figure 2, atvertical central section; and in Figuresgand 4, the two parts of my invention.- p My invention relates to an improvement in that class of burners which are constructed with a case or tube outside the-wick-tube and extending above the tube, and so as to leave a space around the wick-tube, the object 1 :1 of the invention being to spread the flame and increase its brilliancy, and consists, first, in forming the upper end or mouth of the outortube or case flaring or bell-shaped} and, secondly, in perforating thesaid outer tube near its upper end for the purpose of admitting atmospheric air directly on to the flame; i and to enable others to construct rn y improvement I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

A is the wick-tube attached to a socket, B, and provided with a wick adjuster, C, in the usual manner. D is the outer tube or case formed upon or attached to the socket, and surrounding thertube A, so as to leave i space between the two for the'admission of air through openings at a d. Thesaid outer case extends above the,

wickstube A, and has heretoforebeen formed without enlargement or perforations above the point at. The flame from the wick rises through the tube or case D; and, iu order to spread the flar'ue, I enlarge the opening in t he upper end of the case by expanding the tube into a hell'shape,"as seen at E,.in fig. 4. This form of tube tends to expand the flame, while the contracted tube, as heretofore constructed, tends to contract the flame. I 'the outer case, D,- and above the wick-tube A, I perforate the case D, forming openings into which a large Jquantity of airiis drawn directly on to the flame, which tends to increase the size of the'flame, and consequentlf itsbrilliancy. Smith, June 12, 1866, in which a bell-mouthed sleeve is placed over the tube, but such I do not claim. i i i i I do not broadly claim the combination of the wick-tube A and the outer case 'D is of my invention; but H having thus full'y described my invention, what I do claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters i @Patcnt, is- 7 i i 1.
