' Be it known that we, LOUIS A. PERROTTET like parts in all the figures of the drawings. and EDOUARD ANGLY, citizens of the United This improved device for increasing the States, residing in New York, in the county light and at the same time saving the gas '5 of New York and State of New York, have comprises in a general way a device adapted 55 invented certain new and useful Improveto be placed in the top of a chimney or globe ments in a Combined Light-Increasing Device and of such shape that it may be placed withand Smoke-Bell, of which the following is a out adjustment into various sizes of chimneys specification. v and of such structure that it is apprehended IO This invention relates to a combined lightit will prevent the ready escape of the gas- 60 increasing device and smoke-bell; and it more eous fluid, and thereby accomplish the object particularly relates to an improved means for desired.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view are detachably secured together, the smokeof the upper portion of one formof chimney bell being supported by the light-increasing with this improved light-increasing device device through the instrumentalityof brackin position thereon and detached from the ets or arms 8, (shown herein as three in num- 5 smoke-bell. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of ber,) each provided with a pair of slotted or this combined device detached from the chimrecessed ends 9 and 10 to receive the edge of ney, and 4 is a side view of one of the the light-increasing device and the edge of brackets for assembling the smoke-bell and the smoke-bell, and in the construction shown light-increasin g device. these brackets have the material forming the mo same (usually metal) bent upon itself at each end thereof in such manner as to form a bif urcated end. Each of these brackets has its upper bifurcated end 10 extending substantiallyin alinement with the curved part of the bracket, while its lower bifurcated end 9, which is adapted for attachment to the lightincreasing device, projects at an angle to the curvature of the bracket, the intermediate parts 12 of such brackets or arms curving outwardly.
In practice the smoke-bell may be constructed of any suitable material adapted for the purposesuch, for instance, as mica and this may also be the case with the lightincreasiug device-as, for instance, mica or brass. Furthermore, both of the devices may have reflecting-surfaces, if found desirable.
The device is illustrated as disposed in position relative to a Velsbach burner, having the usual mantle and straight cylindrical chimney 13. \Vhile other forms of chimneys may be used, provided the device can properly fit therein so as to secure the effect desired, we have found, however, in actual practice that the straight cylindrical chimney will give a highly-superior result. The device, however, is adapted for all ordinary kinds of burners having chimneys.
We apprehend that in operation this improved light-increasing device, owing to its construction, reduces the outlet from the chimney, the conical form thereof having a peculiar effect in controlling the flow of gas within the chimney, since such gas passes around the outside of the cone A, which projects into the chimney, and is finally turned in and compelled to pass downward in order to emerge from the center of the cone, so that the gas is confined for a longer period within the chimney than would otherwise be the case, thereby increasing the completeness of combustion, and consequently increasing the illumination resulting from a given amount of gas. We also apprehend that this improved device, owing to its construction and disposition with relation to the light-increasing device, shuts off alarge part of the draft through the chimney, thereby preventing the ready escape of the gas, which, as is well known, ordinarily escapes rapidly and prevents complete combustion. Hence this smoke-bell cooperates with the light-increasing device to thereby insure a more complete combustion. Furthermore, in the use of this improved device in connection with a smoke-bell of the construction set forth the upwardly-passing gases after passing the cone strike the under side of the bell B and are thereby deflected, thus heating a transverselywide region of the air above the chimney and so tend to intercept the upward flow of cold air outside of the chimney, all of which tends to keep the entire chimney and the entire space within the same most nearly of the same temperature.

In combination, with a lamp-chimney, a smoke-bell and light-increasing device connected together, said light-increasing device comprising a member having an opening adjacent to its lower end and projecting into said chimney and supported by the edge thereof and effective to secure a more complete combustion of the gases by partially confining the same therein, and said bell having its lower edge free of engagement with said light-increasing device.
