Description

Aug. 28, 1962 H. o. SPERRY DISPLAY ASSEMBLY Filed May 2, 1961 INVENTOR.
HERBERT O.SPERRY AT TORNE Y 3,95ti,%87 DISPLAY ASEMBLY Herbert O. Sperry, Newtown Square, Pa, assignor to Color Process Company, I318. West Conshohoclren, Pin, a corporation of Pennsylvania Filed May 2, 1961, Ser. No. 107,193 2 Claims. (Cl. 49-1241) The present invention relates to advertising mediums and, more particularly, to a display assembly by which an advertising description or slogan can be viewed in a manner to attract attention.
()ne object of the invention is to provide a panel in association with a support for prominently positioning an advertisement for ready viewing.
Another object is to provide a display assembly wherein the parts can be collapsed into a relatively thin package for shipping.
A third object is to provide a panel for advertising material wherein a novel interlocking support can stand in a vertical position with the panel projected in front of, and spaced therefrom, to attract attention of passing viewers.
A further object is to provide a panel which is removably attached to a backing member and positioned in a projected relation to the backing supporting member and to provide other improvements as will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the support member of the assembly;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the tab side of the advertising panel;
FIG. 3 is a perspective View of the unit as partially assembled;
FIG. 4 is a pers ective view of the unit as fully assembled;
PEG. 5 is a section view on line 4 4 of FIG. 4 and;
FIG. 6 is a section view on line 6-6 of FIG. 5.
Referring to the drawings, the display unit of the invention comprises an assembly arranged for packing and shipment as a relatively thin, fiat body but for use being foldable into an upright angular position with an oiiset front face presenting an effective area for advertising material. When assembled it can be used either in a horizontal or vertical position. I
Generally considered the unit comprises a support member 10 and an interlocking backing 11 which mounts a panel 12 to serve as an exposed area for advertising material.
The support member 10 is formed of cardboard or like foldable material, here shown as rectangular in shape having a medial longitudinal score 13 so that the member can be bent into the desired angular display position.
Also the member is formed with two spaced-apart parallel slots 14 and 15 intersecting the score 13 to extend in opposite directions therefrom for mating with parts of the backing 11 as will be explained.
The panel 12 is formed as a blank of cardboard or other suitable material having a selected shape, preferably rectangular, with a width and length less than that of the member 1% in order to focus. attention when mounted in superposed position on the member 10. Also it will lie flat within the boundaries of the member 11 for packing.
For mounting the backing 11 it has two parallel trans verse scores 16 and 17 spaced apart to substantially match the spacing of the slots 14 and 15 in the member 10. These scores 16 and 17 form two outwardly bendable tabs 18 and 19 to pass through the respective slots 14 and 15. The length of the tab 13 is greater than the width of the backing 11 to provide a leg 20 having a Patented Aug. 28, 1962 ice notch 21 at the score line to interfit with the margin of the slot 14 when the tab 18 has been passed through such slot to operative supporting position.
In order to permit the tab 18 to pass through the slot 14 its upper margin is in the form of an are 22 having a radius permitting a snug positioning of the tab. As a means to interlock the tab 18 with the member 10, it has a slot 23 in its arcuate margin disposed at an angle complemental to the selected display angle of the member 19 and so dimensioned as to receive the thickness of the member 1%). When so assembled, the tab 18 is an angu larly disposed leg, supporting the panel 12 in a superposed position spaced from the front of the member 1%], and connected thereto by a reentrant angle interlock. For more stable support the tab 18 has a marginal score 24 whereby a supplemental extension 25 can be folded outwardly at right angle to the tab 18 to seat as a foot upon a table or other support used for the assembly.
The tab 19 is of like configuration and size as thatdescribed for the tab 18, having notch 2-6, leg 27, marginal are 22%, slot 3%) and score 31 forming an extension 32.
in assembling the two members 10 and 11, the legs 29 and 27 of the two tabs are respectively passed through the slots 14 and 15 and swung rearwardly and downwardly on the radius of the arcs 22 and 28 until the respective slots 23 and 39 come into the plane of the member 1%, then the two tabs can be pulled up to interfit the slots 23 and 39 with the member 10 and form the desired interlock. In this position, the leg notches 21 and 26 seat against the lower wall of each slot in the member 16 so that with the legs seated upon a surface the tabs not only support the panel in projected position, but also hold the member it in a depressed angular position.
It will now be apparent that a novel display assembly has been devised for mounting a panel in projected position relative to a backing support member and such assembly being adapted for mounting in either a horizontal or vertical position depending upon the configuration of the article being advertised. For example, in the case of a beer advertisement, the panel will be vertical as illustrating a bottle in standing position. space between the back member and panel is usable to receive an electric light so that with a transparent panel, the advertisers material is sharply defined.
Having now described my invention I claim:
1. A display assembly comprising a backing member bent to form a selected reentrant angle and having two transverse slots, a panel for receiving advertising material, two tabs on said panel projectable towards said member and spaced to traverse said slots respectively and project therefrom, a leg on each-tab to seat on a surface as a support for said member, and means on each tab depending from the projecting portion thereof to interlock with a slot margin to latch said member in bent position and to hold said panel in a projected position within said reentrant angle.
2. A display assembly in accordance with claim 1, wherein each tab has an upper arcuate margin to permit said tabs to turn through said slots into interlocking position, each tab margin having a slot complemental to the selected angle as a part of said latching means. 7
