U ITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE J. L. JANES, OF'OHIOAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOWEL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,934, dated September 9, 1884.
Application filed December 18, 1883.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. L. James, a subject of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Towel-Holders,of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to an improvement in towel-holders; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexeddrawings, in which-- Figure 1 is aside elevation of my invention; and Fig. 2, a cross-section of the same on line w m, Fig. 1.
A represents the holder, consisting of a metal casting formed like an inverted U, and suspended from a counter or other place by means of a screw-eye, B, as usual. One arm of the holder is formed broad at its lower end, and concaved upon its inner side, as seen at a, and has its lower inner corners, a, turned in, as shown in Fig. 2. The other arm, 0, is
bifurcated at its lower end, and has hinged therein a bar, b, having a head, 1/, with a curved face, lying normally within the concave arm a, and upon a web or bottom, of the same, as seen in the drawings. The towel to be suspended is drawn up within the holder, and the bar I), dropping into place, holds the material into the concave arm a, and the corners a fold the cloth completely around the head I), thus securely holding the towel in place, and preventing it from being removed (N0 model.)
till the hinged bar is lifted. The surfaces with which the material comes in contact being smooth, the goods are not liable to undue wear or to have their threads strained apart, as is frequently the case in the holders in common use.
To look the bar from being lifted by accident, I place upon the arm 0 an eccentric ring, 0, and form the bar I) with a notch, If. \Vhen the bar is dropped into place, the ring'slips down upon it, and, being turned till its larger part fills the notch b", effectually prevents the bar from being lifted till the lock is removed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.. In a towel-holder, a U-shaped holder having one arm recessed and the other pro vided with a hinged bar formed with a head adapted to drop into said recess, substantially as shown and described.
2. Inatowel-holder,a U-shapedholder hav ing one arm broadened and recessed, in combination with a bar hinged to the other arm, and adapted to lie in said recess, and a looking device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. r
3. In a towel-holder, the part A, having the recessed part a, corners a,and ledge a", in combination with the hinged bar I), having notch b, and head I), and the eccentric locking-ri1ig O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. J. L. JANES.
