WlNDOW-BEAD FASTENER.

BPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,654, dated August 19, 1884.

Be it known that I, DAVID C. MCGREGOR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of East Oakland, in the county of Alameda and Stateof California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVindow-Frames and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theiuvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one side of a window-frame, provided with my improved fastening for the cleat and partingbead, showing the fastening in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a view of the jamb, with the cleat and 'parting bead removed. Fig. 3 is a view of the inner'side of the cleat. Fig. 4 is a view of theremovable part of the parting-bead,

. and Fig.5 is a perspective view of a slight modification of the fastening.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

My invention has relation to fastenings for the cleats and parting beads of windowframes, which secure port-ions of the said cleats and beads removably, for the purpose of removing the sashes from the windows without marring the appearance of the frame; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of partsof the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

111 the accompanying drawings, theletter A indicates the jamb of a window-frame; B, the removable cl cat, which confines the inner sash, and C the parting-bead, which divides the ways of the inner and of the outer sash; The inner side of the removable cleat has a longitudinal recess, D, in which a flat bar, E, slides, the said bar being retained in the recess by bands or strips F; and flaps or lugs G are cut out of the bar, adhering to, the bar at the upper ends of the slot, cutting out the flaps, and a lever, H, is pivoted upon theinner side of the cleat at the side of the lower end of the fiat bar, and slides and turns, with a longitudinal slot, I, upon a pin or stud, J, upon the lower end of the bar. The jamb of the window has at its lower end a recess, K, in which the lever plays, and a number of recesses, L, corresponding innumber and location to the flaps upon the flat bar, each of which recesses is provided with a staple, M, into which the flap may hook when the bar is drawn down ward, holding the cleat firmly to the jamb. A portion, N, of the parting-bead is cut off from the remaining portion of the bead by an upwardly-inelined out, and the lower end of the removable portion of the bead is rounded, so as to admit of its upper oblique end being inserted under the oblique end of the rigid portion of the bead, and the lower end of the removable bead be forced in against the sill, the bead fitting into a groove, 0, in the usual manner; and a long staple, 1?, is secured in the jamb at the side of the groove, in which the end of the lever upon the inner side of the cleat may play, entering into a groove, Q, in the sideof the removable bead, serving to retain it in its position when inserted in thegroove. In this manner it will be seen that by drawing the end of the lever upward it I will be drawn out of the groove in the bead,

and the lever will at the same time raise the fiat sliding bar, releasing the flaps out of their staple, allowing the cleat to be removed and the removable portion of the bead to be removed, which will admit of the sashes being taken out of the frame or inserted in the same.

Having thus described myinve'ntion, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the jamb of a window-frame, having recesses provided with staples, a removable cleat forming sliding ways, a sliding bar having inwardlyprojecting flaps or lugs adapted to engage the staples in the jamb, and a lever pivoted'upon the cleat and to the sliding bar, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

2. The combination of the jamb of a window-frame, having agroove for a removable parting-bead, a recess near its lower end and recesses in its side, staples secured in the said recesses, avertical staple secured at the lower end of the groove for the parting-bead, a removable parting-bead having a groove in its ILL side, near its lower end, a cleat forming vertical sliding ways, a Hat bar having; flaps or lugs out out of its middle, pointing downward and sliding in the vertical ways, and a lever pivoted upon the inner side of the eleat, sliding with its slot upon a stud at the lower end of the flat bar, and engaging with its free end in the groove in the side of the removable head, projecting and sliding in the staple at the purpose shown and set forth.
