FREDERICK G. ELY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
POUNCE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,439, dated July l, 1884.
Application filed June b ,aZZ whom it 'may concern:
- Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. ELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pounce-Boxes; and I hereand exact description of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for holding pounce, which, for convenience in using, may be secured to the end of an eraser-handle, and shall be operated for scattering the pounce over and rubbing it into the abraided surface of paper to regloss it, whereby the ink in writing upon the same shall be prevented from spreading and blot- My invention consists in a `pounce box comprising a receptacle for the pounce and a perforated soft-rubber head secured to and fold purpose of permitting the discharge of the poune and the rubbing of thesame into the paper.
My invention also consists in combining with such a pounce-box means whereby it may be attached to an eraser-handle; and it consists, further, in the specific construction which I prefer to employ, all as hereinafter' more fully set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective viewof an eraser with my improved ,pouncebox attached, and Fig. 2 a central longitudinalsection of the pounce-box attached to the C is a box or receptacle for pounce.
B is the blade, and A the handle of an eraser, to the end of which the device may be secured.
The box C is preferably formed of metal, though rubber, or any preparation in which rubber forms a component part, wood, or other suitable material may be used.
D is a cover, consisting of a ring, n, havengage with the screw-threads u, formed on the body of the box, and having an inward ly-projecting flange, t, and of the head d, formed of soft rubber and providedwith holes ing a bottom for it.
13, 1883. (No model.)
lto permit the pounce to be discharged. The
rubber head ci is provided with a collar or lateral iiange, d, also of soft rubber, and is made somewhat larger than the opening in the ring, to cause it to fit tightly within the same. To secure the soft-rubber head within the ring D, I force it through the latter from its rear end, to bring the collar d against the inner face of the iange t. The head is thus iirmly secured in position by the expansion of the rubber over the edge of the flange,
as shown at w.
If desired, thevreceptacle, formed as above described, may be permanently attached to an eraser; or it may be formed in one piece and detachably secured by iittiug'upon the handle, or by providing screw -threads toward the end of its interior surface to engage with a corresponding screw-thread upon the end ofthe eraser-handle, when the end of the eraser-handle will form a plug for the receptacle, and avoid the necessity of form- VVhen thus detachably secured, the receptacle may be supplied with pounce through the opening provided by separating the box and handle. lThe pouncebox may, however, be sold and vused as a vseparate article, and may also be provided with a band of elastic material formed around the edge of its lower circumference, whereby it shall be adjustable to any form of eraser. In either of the lastnamed instances the box should be provided with a bottom, when the cover must be removed to iill it.
To operate my device, after abrasion of the paper by means of an eraser, pounce is scattered over the abraded surface to be reglossed, by tapping or gently pressing upon it, (the head of the box,) when the pounce is rubbed into the paper by means of the rubber head. Owing toI the resistance offered by the paper, mere pressure against it suffices to effect the discharge of a portion of the contents of the box by distending the aperturesV in the perforated soft-rubber head. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A pounce-box comprising, in combination, a receptacle, C, and a perforated soft'- rubber head7 d, detaehably secured to and rear end7 ring D, secured to the receptacle A forming one end of the said receptacle, for the C, and perforated soft-rubber head d, fitting 1o twofold purpose of permitting the discharge Within the said ring, substantially as deof the pounee and the rubbing of the same scribed.
5 into the paper7 substantially as described. FREDERICK G. ELY.
` 2. The pounceb0x for attachment to an ln presence 0feraser-handle, comprising, in combination, the p CONRAD H. ROHDE, receptacle C, internally screw-threaded at'its EDWARD MGOAFFREY.
